What became of James Duncan Stewart born Cullen 1841
« on: Sunday 20 July 08 19:31 BST (UK) »

Trying to find out what happenned to James Duncan Stewart after1851. Born in Cullen in 1841 to Alexander Stewart (sometimes under Stuart spelling) & Elspeth Grant. Features in 1851 census living with family at Cullen house. Father possibly Gate Keeper. A possible, but not entirely convincing, entry in 1861 census. This James is a ploughman working at Arrandoul (?) Farm near Buckie, birth place given as Cullen, age not precisely accurate. After that nothing. With a name as common as his it is proving hard to trace James.

What happened to John Duncan Stewart? - just linking up the threads so there's not an overlap of info! Wink

Just a couple of suggestions. James' father, Alexander, died 1883, aged 80. Have you checked his death certificate to see who registered it? Same with his mother's death; any chance he was the informant? Also have you tried burials in Cullen or nearby towns? He may have died before 1855.

Thanks for getting in touch hume24, this is one of my oldest brick walls. I have a copy of James Duncan's father's death cert. The informant was Alexander's  son-in-law Charles Taylor (husband of daughter Elspet). I have found no record at all of the death of James Duncan's mother. I even visited the local family history centre in Elgin where I got lots of family info. but not a recording  of Elspeth's death. I suppose I was hoping in Vain that  somebody on RootsChat might just have James Duncan Stewart in their family tree. Also, problem is that this surname often takes Stuart form of spelling in records so the problem can be compounded.
