Bishop in Ratho and Falkirk
« on: Tuesday 28 March 06 22:05 UTC (UK) »

Has anyone found links between Ratho and Falkirk in the late 1700s?

I have two direct ancestors named Bishop, one is Barbara Bishop who was born in 1785 in Ratho.

The other is William Bishop who was married in Falkirk in 1783.

Barbara married James Orr and their great grandson, another James Orr married Grace Forrest.

William Bishop married Margaret Ure and their great grandaughter Grace Forrest married James Orr.

Bishop doesn't seem to be such a common name in Scotland, and as Ratho and Falkirk aren't too far apart I wonder if Barbara and William could have been from the same family.

In the parish records for Falkirk there are several William Bishops at that time so I haven't been able to work out which is mine or if he could be from the Bishops that lived in Ratho.

Any ideas to where to go from here would be good.

Hi Min,

I had a wee look in the BVR's to see what I could find out for you.

Barbara (born 14 Aug 1785 and christened 21 Aug 1785) was the third child of four born to Robert Bishop and Christian Wardlaw and they were all born in Ratho between 1781 and 1787.

If you want details of Barbara's siblings, just let me know.

I looked for a William Bishop born c1763 in Midlothian and found 2:

William BISHOP, born 27 June 1760, christened 6 July 1760
Recorded in South Leith
Father: James BISHOP, Mother: Catherine SWINTON

and

William BISHOP, born 2 Feb 1763, christened 6 Feb 1763
Recorded Corstorphine
Father: John BISHOP, Mother: Jean STORY.

The second William, born in Corstorphine had an older brother Robert born in 1761. As Corstorphine is only along the road from Ratho . . . . maybe the William you have (as married in Falkirk in 1783) is Barbara's uncle.

Wishful thinking . . . . you never know!!

Anne

P.S. There were 901 Bishops born in Midlothian between 1595 and 1886!

Hi Anne,

You've been really helpful in finding so much information on Bishops.

Either of the Williams you mention could be the one married in Falkirk in 1783.

Barbara, b 1785 went to live in Kirkliston and then Corstorphine and her son, Robert Orr had two sons that went on to work at Leith as Company Porters.

The Scottish naming pattern has been very useful in trying to find out who the parents might be of an individual. You have to have all of the children to do this though, and sometimes that is hard.

You said you have details of Barabara's siblings. I'd found her on the IGI to be the third of four children, all girls. There were probably other siblings that don't show up on the IGI. A visit to Edinburgh to look at the actual parish records might throw up some sons in the family.

You've given me food for thought,

Thanks

Hi Min,

My wife is descended from Christina/Christian ORR (bapt. 22 May 1808 Kirkliston) daughter of James ORR and Barbara BISHOP, and I guess a sister to your ancestor Robert ORR.

According to my research, some of which has been from the IGI and is therefore rather tentative, she married John BINNIE (b. 3 Nov 1804), although I'm not sure when or where.  They had at least four children, a son John BINNIE born c. 1827 being my wife's 3g-grandfather.

I would be very happy to ecxhange data on our respective lines, if you would like to email me.

Regards and best wishes,

Hi Brett,

Thanks for replying to my message and I'm sorry I've taken so long to reply  to you.

I didn't know who Christina had married so any information you can give me on her family is welcomed.

I had a look on Scotland's people for census records for John and Christina but the image for 1851 isn't readable.

I also tried the 1861 census for their son John b 1827 and found one living at Abercorn but I'm not sure if this is the right John Binnie?

My ancestor Robert Orr was married to Margaret Nicol who was from Abercorn but as these places are so close to one another , that doesn't necessarily mean anything.

Regards

Hi Marion

Good to hear from you.  I have transcripts of the 1841 and 1851 Census for John and Christina BINNIE.  By 1861 their eldest son John BINNIE (c1827-1862) had married Catherine Edmonstone SOMERVILLE (1822-1892) and was living at Powderhaugh House, Colinton, Midlothian.  The Abercorn one must be a different person.

I have plenty more for yuou if you are interested, and would be keen to have details of your line of descent to add into my files.  I will get in touch by email.

Regards and best wishes, Brett
