1891 Census - Wood
« on: Wednesday 29 March 06 06:19 BST (UK) »

Hi everyone,

I am looking for Alfred Wood in 1891 Census for Hampshire.  He was born 1854 Nottinghamshire.  He is married at the time, but not listed in Portsea with his wife Ellen age 30 born Kent and their three children.  Alfred Wood was still alive, but having problems locating him.

Thank you, Adeline

Hi Bearkat,

This is going to be hard to explain, but I still hope that you or anyone else might be able to help me in finding some answers........... but yes, apparently it is listed in 1896 on Lilian Kemp's birth certificate (however the Wood surname Lilian adopted in later life, possibly due to, it being her mothers married surname and possibly wanted to carry on the Wood surname on behalf of her mother?)  it is mentioned that her father was retired from the Royal Navy.

Lilian was born on the 3 September 1896. and in the 1901 census for Hampshire Lilian Kemp is listed as a daughter of Robert Kemp, whom her mother Ellen Wood born 1861 Kent, was boarding along with another daughter Kate Ellen Wood born in 1889 Portsea, Portsmouth, Hampshire.  Yet, sometime between 1889 and 1896, Ellen's husband, Alfred Wood took one son William John Wood born 1887 Kent, and moved back to Nottinghamshire and both are listed there boarding by the 1901 census.  Alfred Wood at this time, cannot be located even in 1891 in Nottinghamshire.

But since I am searching an illegitamate birth, and I have found that Lilian's real father was not Alfred Wood........it is infact Robert Kemp mentioned in this 1901 census.  There is a Robert Kemp who was in the Royal Navy born in Poppesfield Essex.......... even tho, I cannot locate where Poppesfield was, it might have been a village that once was, near Heybridge, or that no longer exisists where Robert Kemp was born....... but I don't know for sure?

There is however an Alfred Ernest Wood born in Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, enlisted in 1899 which I highly doubt it is the same man I am in quest of, despite that this Alfred uses the middle name Ernest, which is not found in other records at this time..........and besides the time frame does not fit, and also to take into consideration, early in life he was working in the coal mines and later a plumber.  So it just dosen't fit for the same Alfred Wood.  But the Royal Navy information, does fit for Lilian's real father Robert Kemp, whom I can also not locate in 1891 census in Hampshire.

I cannot find Alfred Wood nor Robert Kemp in 1891 census.  Sad

To find those answers could be a needle in a haystack, but I am willing to listen to other opinions and any help in this matter would be so greatly appreciated.

Adeline
