Portrait of the genealogist as a young man

I'd like to get family tree charts (direct ancestors only) onto my site.
While I have some trees at the moment they are not very good - I used a Microsoft excel template and converted them into web pages and imported them into my site.
I've looked at http://www.ida.net/users/elaine/pedigre2.htm and had a go but I don't like the typeface. I couldn't work out how to change it!
Anyone got any suggestions?

Hi Lyndon
I liked your chart and the general approach on that page. I have adopted a similar approach - save my report from the family history software as a jpeg, tidy it up (a background fill) and then just having it as a static image on the website - http://etherington.rootschat.net/html/arthur_etherington_s_direct_an.html But I like the interactivtiy on your page.
However, I read a review of http://www.dftcom2.co.uk/ in Family History Monthly and, looking at it, it seems to be a useful way of uploading a tree to a website. Having said that - I haven't worked out how to do it yet (!) - managed to import my gedcom into dft, but couldn't get the files to sit on the web properly.
cheers
Paul

Hi Guys,
I've merged these two topics, as they have the same theme.
This is something I have been thinking about since starting my family history CD/Website, and it will be my next big project for my website.
So if anybody has any tips or examples, add them here, .... please !!!
One program I looked at was "Adam" which also exports trees in HTML format for webpages. I'm off to work now, but I'll post an example tonight.

I have now uploaded an example of the HTML output from "Adam" Input was an (incomplete) GEDCOM file.
you can see it at http://boco.rootschat.net/COMM/adam/index.htm (Firefox is showing a lot of the table borders, whereas Internet explorer is showing a "clean" version without the borders )
Adam gives you quite a lot of choices, including whether to have names and/or images in your chart
it is a complete family history program, but I have just been using the "Import GEDCOM", "Export as HTML" features, without actually entering any data in the program.
see more here: http://www.use-adam.com/adam.html
It's .... well it's OK, but it's still not exactly what I want ! I may end up having to write a program myself !

Berlin Bob is referring to another thread where he said
At the moment I am using Excel to draw up trees, one tree pro A4 page. The (preview) results are viewable at http://boco.rootschat.net/i-trees.php It's a lot of work, but as Amy has said about PowerPoint: ... you can get your tree to look exactly how you want it. It takes a lot of time but I think the end result is worth it. ... the next stage is to "clean up" the background colour, and then I want to add hyperlinks to the names, so that I can jump straight to the biographies. I haven't decided yet how - the PowerPoint idea sounds good, or I may try "drawing" the tables in HTML (Eeeek !!). I also tried converting the excel tables to HTML but that didn't work properly, so I shall keep trying. I'll post here if I find a good soöution, and I I shall continue to monitor this posting in case somebody else does ! I started this thread because I wasn't happy with my static excel-based trees on my site. (I think I want something more interactive)
This url points to the worst case page on my site
http://juliancbaker.rootschat.net/html/walter_joseph_carter_family_tr.htm
Berlin Bob's post on the other thread refers to cleaning up the excel pages. My first attempt at saving the excel chart as a web page ended up with the cell references on. I then tried "preview web page" and this produced a chart without the cell references on so I saved those versions as html, and I was away.
The problem with pages like these are (a) they are bigger than the browser (so I guess I could try again with the smallest possible typeface, but my eyes are starting to go!), and (b) I'm not sure how I can set up hyperlinks as Net Objects Fusion (my web package) doesn't actually display the page, and I'm not HTML-savvy at all so don't feel it worth the investment of trying (and failing) to insert links etc in the base code.
Anyway, I thought I ought to post this explanation of my experience with excel for family tree pages, in case anyone does want to have a go.
(There's enough material already here for a major feature in one of the family history mags - keep it coming!)

Which magazine would that be, then, Julian?
Maybe Practical Family History Website Design would be interested http://etherington.rootschat.net/html/pfhwm.html
Seriously, though, this was a good debate to have started - shows how we are all grappling with the same problem in different ways.
cheers

You're always on the case - well spotted! Or is it more that you can take a hint!
In the light of:
http://etherington.rootschat.net/html/uktvfamilyhistory.html
I heard a rumour that Lonnie Donegan recorded "Does your gedcom lose its flavour on the bedpost overnight", as well as "My old man's a dustman"
