Hi Helen, I do not know if my george sutherland is related to your george. i think my george's parents were alexander sutherland & jane cooper. my george was born c 1808. i have not been able to find any info on his parents or if he has siblings. thanks for your help. maybe there is a connection that we don't know about yet. marion

Hi Marion,
Your best bet for finding the family on the 1851 census would be via the (pay per view) site ScotlandsPeople at: http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk
An index to the 1851 Clyne census is published by the Scottish Genealogy Society and can be purchased from them - see: http://www.scotsgenealogy.com/acatalog/Sutherland_1851_Census_indices.html But that is only an index.
The IGI at FamilySearch (a free site) at: http://www.familysearch.org lists (all events at Clyne, Sutherland) the following marriage: George SUTHERLAND and Catherine MATHESON, 4 Jan 1833 and the following births of children to parents of those names: Alexander, 26 Feb 1834 John, 18 Dec 1835 George, 24 Dec 1837 Jean, 31 Aug 1841 James, 28 Mar 1846 Catherine, 2 Jun 1848
As Arranroots has kindly pointed out (I assume you will have looked this up by now), FreeCEN (another free site) has the 1841 census for Clyne online. It has the following record which might very probably be your people (though SUTHERLAND seems to be a common name in Clyne): Doll, Clyne Sutherland SUTHERLAND George, 30, Ag Labourer Do Catharine, 35 Do Esther, age unknown Do Catharine, age unknown Do John, 5 All members of the household born in Sutherland. Unfortunately relationships are not shown in the 1841 census and ages of persons over 15 were supposed to be rounded down to the nearest 5.
Good luck,
JAP PS: if George and Catherine survived until Statutory Registration began in Scotland (1855), their death certificates (certificates can be downloaded from ScotlandsPeople for a fee - but charges are quite reasonable) could provide invaluable information.
NOTE: Edited to correct errors; if anyone saw the earlier version I can only say that I must need new glasses
