Scarrel?
« on: Friday 31 March 06 06:43 BST (UK) »

Hi all,

I have the Graham family from Scarrel, North Bute, according to the censuses.  They lived there for forty years at least.  I can't find Scarrel on a map anywhere.

Is there, or was there ever such a place (I thought it may be the name of a farm or a house), and if so, does anyone have a link to a map that shows its location please?

Nina

Nina:
I saw mention of Scarrel on the Isle of Bute. http://stones.non-prophet.org/archive/sa/2003-01/msg00191.html

There were 41 people with the name Graham on Bute in the 1841 census. http://www.butesonsanddaughters.co.uk/census1841.shtml

Here is map but sorry, Scarrel does not show on it. Multimap Link

Hope this helps some.

Pat

Thanks Pat,

I had already found those links, but it was nice of you to look anyway.  I am leaning towards the place being a farm.  Alexander Graham was a farmer, and the family lived there for a number of years.  A search for Scarrel Bute only brings up one genealogy reference to the place from 1787 but that link is broken.  You would think if it was even a small village that more would have been on the net.

I thin I will try a query at Bute sons and daughters site.

Thanks anyway,

Nina

Andrew over at TalkingScot found it for me on the ordinance maps!  It was a farm near the west coast not far from Eenan Hill.
