Hi again

I have been looking into William's place of birth supposedly Stanford, Shropshire.  There is no place in Shropshire of that name so the enumerator or William must have got it wrong!!  I have checked the 1851 image and it clearly states Stanford.

Shropshire has the following places which could be a possibility:
  • Stanton
  • Stanton Lacy
  • Stanton Long
  • Stanlow
  • Stanton upon Hine Heath

I will look into this further and get back to you.......I have to be in work in half an hour Sad

hi Jan thanks for going to so much trouble for me.
as for Stanford, a guy from OZ sent me a small map, showing Stanford, as you say it is not on any of my maps.
if you take the a458 heading out of Shrewsbury to Welshpool, you take a right at wollaston on a side rd heading to Alberbury, it's midway between the two.
so thats as far as i have got with that, a friend who lives in Church stretton said he will have a drive round when he gets chance and see if there is a church there. so no nearer William as yet, but hopefully with help i will find him thanks again for your trouble, going away for a week so if you don't get a reply thats why bren.

Foxall says it is 1 mile N of Halfway House.
he also lists a Little Stanford there.

Stanford Gate is at Eaton near Church Stretton.

I think the nearest church is at Wollaston.

Well, there it is on multimap!!!!!!!

I can always drive there and have a nose round for you - I go out that way a lot visiting my friend.

Jan

P.S.  A search of "Stanford Halfway House  Shrewsbury" brings up a couple of websites for businesses operating there.

This could be a possible death for William:

Deaths Mar Quarter 1885
William Bevan Age 40
District:  Salford
Volume: 8d
Page 12

Which would make his year of birth 1845, assuming his age was correct on the death certificate of course!

I have done a search for his birth using the range 1845 - 1850 and can only find one for Atcham:

Birth March Quarter 1848
District: Atcham
Volume: XVIII
Page: 18

Jan Smiley

Edit:  I have just noticed that if William's daughter Mary was 12 in 1901 then that would make her year of birth 1889, so William couldn't have died in 1885 - unless he wasn't Mary's father Undecided  Have you got her birth certificate?

hi jan
yes have mary's birth cert 29th march 1889 greengate salford.
11 simpsons passage, it looks like Brennery st can't make it out.
father william Bevan mother Alice Marsden, Chorley. so william must have died shortly after her birth, as alice is a widow  on the 1901 census. so that musn't have been our william in salford.
the pelling on the 1901 census was Bevin they were living at 9 lester st salford.
his birth date should be arounf 1851, if he was telling the truth.
bye for now bren

thanks for the offer of having a snoop round for me.
i wonder if i can be cheeky, and just mention my grandfathers parents who are proving equally problematic , and seeing they are from your part of the world.
Charles Daves a journey man butcher from Welshpool born abt 1851. married Elizabeth Hill  she was from Brosley salop abt 1862/4
they were married in Madeley have the year somewhere and have sent for cert.
i have also sent for my grandfathers cert Arthur Henry davies born 1887 Madeley.  there are a few possible Elizabeth Hill, the certs will sort her out, but can't find anything on Charles from welshpool.
for 1851 or there abouts,  i have them on the 1891 census living at 60 wilton st haywood lancs.
