Shropshire marriage - was she a widow?
« on: Thursday 30 March 06 14:09 BST (UK) »

I have found the marriage of Joan GITTON to George OLDBURY in St Leonard's, Bridgnorth on 2nd October 1781 – it's listed on the IGI and also on Boyds Marriage Index on British Origins. I would like to know whether Joan was a widow at the marriage – can anyone help me find out?

Many thanks for any help you can give!

Hi Jane,

I can't help with the marriage but is this the family tomb?

Underneath are deposited the remains of George OLDBURY, late of Eardington within this Parish. Gent, who died 3rd April 1809 in the 63rd year of his age.
Also Joan, wife of the said George OLDBURY, who died 30th June 1824 in the 84th year of her age.
Also of George OLDBURY, Gent, son of the said George and Joan OLDBURY who died 17th November 1845, aged 62 years.
Also Margaret Anne OLDBURY, daughter of George and Mary OLDBURY who died 14th January 1851, aged (15 or 75?) years.

From the Monumental Inscriptions at Saint Mary Magdalene, Quatford near Bridgnorth that I transcribed for the Shropshire Family History Society.

Hope it helps,
Gwynne Chadwick

Hello Gwynne

Yes, that's the family – great to have the extra info. You were such a help with my Duppa research last year – thank you so much for your help once again!

The Oldbury and the Gitton families are linked to the Duppas in some way and I'm trying to work out exactly how. Thomas Gitton mentions "my brother George Oldbury" in his will, and I'm guessing that Thomas's mother, Joan, was widowed and remarried George Oldbury senior, producing George junior and two sisters. (It would have been nice to be able to support my theory by finding that she was a widow when she married George, but you can't have everything.) All the other info on the inscription you sent confirms the details I had already and also lets me know why Margaret Anne disappeared off the scene!

Now I just have to untangle the Oldbury/Duppa connection.

Many thanks once again for your help.
