I have an ancestor Henry Waters who is causing a problem with his place of birth C1845. In the English Census' his birthplace is recorded as follows:
1861 Berwickshire. 1871 Scremerston. 1881 Northumberland, Berwick. 1891 Northumberland Morpeth. 1901 Little Mill Apart from 1861 all birthplaces are in Northumberland.
In 1861 the family gave their places of birth as James Waters, head, 47, Berwickshire. Elizabeth do, wife, 57, do John, do, son 20, do William, do, do 18, do Henry, do, do 15, do James, do, do, 12, Northumberland George, do, do, 9, do Robert, do, do, 5, do
I cannot find the family in the 1851 English census. Has anyone come across the family in Berwickshire in 1851 or in some parish in Berwickshire around 1845, any help greatly appreciated. Many Thanks

I have now discovered a possible hit for the family in 1841 Scottish census as follows: Address, Clappers, Mordington Parish. James Waters, abt 1816 Berwickshire Scotland Elizabeth Waters, abt 1816 Scotland John Waters, abt 1841 Berwickshire Scotland Hellen Petersen, abt 1826 Berwickshire Scotland This is from an index to the 1841 scottish census on Ancestry.co.uk. if someone can provide more info from the actual census and/or find them in 1851 I would be grateful. Many thanks

Hi Fremund
The 1841 Census in Scotland was quite limited in terms of the info it contained. You have on the index pretty much all the info that is contained on the original page, the only thing you didn't mention but which you have already probably seen, is that James Waters and Helen Peterson are both down as agri. labourers.
The 1841 Census does not give relationships within the household. Also, ages for anyone over 15 were supposed to be rounded down to the nearest 5. Therefore, your James Waters could have been born anytime between1812-1816. Children under 15 are supposed to show their actual age.
The only other main point from the 1841 Census is place of birth which was simply given as a response to the question: were you born in the county the census is taking place - yes/no - with the exception of English/Irish birth where the country is supposed to be shown.
Hopefully someone can find the family in Scotland if they hadn't already left for England and you should get more precise birth places.
Regards.
Monica

Hi Monica, Thanks for your help and info on the census. The simple point you made about ages, has allowed me to focus in on a baptism for a Henry in1812 that an internet friend has located in Coldstream. Though this would put his age in later English census's out a bit. Thanks again. Pete
