MacAulays of Uig, Isle of Lewis
« on: Sunday 02 April 06 15:26 UTC (UK) »

Hi
Does anyone have anything on JOHN MACAULAY b 1806 and his wife ANN MACAULAY b 1806 married in 1825. They both came from Uig, Isle of Lewis but moved before 1841 census to Shader, Point, Isle of Lewis.
They had seven children : ANN b1826, CHRISTIAN b1829, NEIL b1831, MURDO b1834, MARY b1836, JOHN b1839.
Thanks in advance
Catriona.

Hello Catriona

You have a diifcult search looking in Lewis around that time!  Records for the four parishes are often incomplete and thee are lots of repetitions of the same names. It can be very difficult tring to pick out which family is yours. after 2 years of fruitless searches we finally decided to let the local professionals do it for us.
Have a look at:  http://www.seallam.com/intro.htm and come to your own conclusions.
their rates are very reasonable.

best i can do

1851 census; shulishader, stornoway

ann...head...age 44...small tenant...born uig
christian...dau...age 22
neil...son...age 20...fisherman
murdo...son...age 17...ag labourer
john...son...age 12
catherine...age 9
ann...grand-daughter...age 2

children all born stornoway

1861 census; shulishader road, shulishader

ann...head...age 50...crofter
neil...son...age 29...fisherman...born uig
murdo...son...age 27...fisherman...born shulishader
john...son...age 21...fisherman...born shulishader
catherine...dau...age 18...fisherman...born shulishader
john...servant...age 15...domestic servant....born shulishader

needle in a haystack for the 1841 census, looks like your john has died by the 1851 census, if you search the igi's you will find most marriages for the children in stornoway.

happy hunting

Have you tried http://www.hebrideanconnections.com/
It looks excellent!

The link to seallam given above is also brilliant - I gave in and paid £70 and was delighted with the results for my Lewis ancestors.

Kind regards,
William

Apologies Joe and William for not replying earlier.

Thank you Joe - yes that is the family I am researching but what I would like to know is when they moved from Uig to Shulishader. I have all the information after they moved to Point.

And William thanks for the link - I contacted Hebridean Connections last year and they did try to help but at that time they didn't have the info I am needing but will let me know if they come across anything - they are all so helpful there.

In the meantime I have found that my MacAulay ancestors came from Bosta and Kirkibost in Bernera, Isle of Lewis but am still in the dark as to why and when they moved to Shulishader, Point.

Thanks for your help.

Good luck in your searches

Google Bernera Historical Society and a few contacts appear.  They should at least be able to tell you about the general economy at the time which I suspect is why they left.  At that time alot of people left Uig and populated Carloway and Barvas.  Bernera is a small enough place that there are living people who remember stories and family memories.  Bosta is a beautiful place with a lovely beach!!
