I can't see the page I have linked to?
« on: Monday 03 April 06 11:26 BST (UK) »

Hi there,

With the help of BD & BB I have managed to get my front page on the web (thanks again guys).  I even managed to produce a 2nd page and created a hyperlink between the two.  It works great in the front page programme but when I look at it on the net the hyperlink goes to an error message page
www.bramwell.rootschat.net
- - - Unable to open file '/home/vhosts/bramwell.rootschat.net/George Quayle.htm'. No such file or directory - - -
I have saved the file so please, what have I done wrong?  Roll Eyes

Thanks Vanda  Grin

Hi Vanda,

looks good so far !!

rename George Quayle.htm to GeorgeQuayle.htm or George_Quayle.htm and rename the link accordingly.

Because of the space, your browser probably thinks it's looking for a file called George

Thanks Bob,

It has worked now, something else I've learnt  Grin

I've used a theme from frontpage, a very simple one, the background is textured and very light but it doesn't show up on the web page, is there a reason for it?

Thanks Vanda

 Hi Vanda   Grin

Every picture and graphic that you use, every GIF and JPG, must be uploaded separately. So you will need to upload the jpg or gif that you are using for the background. Smiley

Could it be that the text file has a white background has overridden the textured background Huh

I was playing last night and that happened to me.

Hi Vanda,

Burrow Digger had a similar problem a while ago.

Have a read of this and see if it helps:

Thanks Bob,

Just got in from work so sorry I didn't reply earlier.

I think my problem is more basic than that of BD's.  Earlier you said I had to save the background separately and upload it but the 'theme' I have chosen doesn't seem to have a separate bit to save.  In front page it says you can apply a theme to your page and press OK, which I did.  I have saved the whole page and uploaded it but the background and bullet points still don't appear.  Huh

This is your background code. Smiley

background= " _themes/sumipntg/sumtextb.jpg "

I have 3 suggestions.

1 - Find the jpg - it will be in the Themes folder, and upload it separately. And then recode this line on your pages to remove the  _theme/sumipntg/  part.

2 - Right click on your page in your browser (front page) and click "save background as" and then upload that to rootschat, and recode the pages as above.

3 - If these dont work, you might have to change your background picture altogether. Sad

Same thing with the bulletin points.

OK, I've done number 2 as above and saved it in a folder I named 'themes'.  Uploaded it to the web using the file manager and it says I have a file called "sumtextb.jpeg"

I have looked at the web page again but nothing has happened so I think I may have to get another background from somewhere  Huh

Hi Vanda,

The problem is this bit is linking to the wrong bit:

Code:
<body background="_themes/sumipntg/sumtextb.jpg"

If you change that bit to:

Code:
<body background="sumtextb.jpg"

then it will work.  If you don't know how to change this then right click on your html file and open it with notepad.  Then change the bit above and save it and then reupload the file to your site.

You just forgot the last step - to redo the code on your main page. Smiley   And then upload the main page again.

If you do what Andrew says everything should work ok. Smiley

Remember everytime you change anything on your page, it needs to be uploaded again.

OK, I have no idea what to do, sorry guys  Embarrassed

If I right click on the HTML page lots of options appear but nothing that says I can open it in notepad?

There isn't a themes folder so all I have done is right clicked on the background itself and 'saved background as' in my web folder.  When I open the folder in 'my documents-my webs' I can see the background file sumtextb.  When I open the folder in 'MS Front Page' there is nothing there.

I have looked on the HTML page to see if I can find any text that starts with <body background but I can't see anything remotely like it.

I'll see if there is anything in the help menu in the MS Front Page programme.

Hi Wanda,

if you right click on a web-page, you should get a context menu, where one of the menu points is "Show source code" or something similar (I only have the german texts here  Sad )
click on here and the page should be shown in notepad.
Within notepad, if you click on the file menu, you can then "save as ...." on your hard-disk. This is equivalant to downloading it from the website

BUT .........

You already have this page on your computer, in
Quote
the folder in 'my documents-my webs'
so you can modify it there, without downloading it from the web first.

But, as has been mentioned, any changes do have to be uploaded to your website.

Good luck,
Bob
