ticehurst marriages
« on: Sunday 10 October 04 18:26 UTC (UK) »

Hi there.

Joseph Wenham 1747 married Frances Crittenden on the 29th June 1772 at St Mary Ticehurst. Is it possible to fine their marriage lines and so their parents? any help very gratefully received!

thanks Meg

Hallo Chris, Thanks for your prompt reply. I've mailed the vicar at St Mary Ticehurst perhaps he can come up with something and I'll have to follow the lead from Etchington where Joseph Wenham was born.

Good hunting

Hi Meg

Well done

I looked on the 1801 census for ticehurst (yes, this census still survives) and although there are 3 wickam families, non have John as the head (1 Humphrey, 2 Richard)

Also looked for Wenham / Whenham  and Cruttendon families - but there were none of either.

hi Chris, couldn't find anything about the other witness
J. Polhill, I'd hoped it was John Wickhams fiance, but he married Jenny Kemp so that put pay to that fantasy!!!

Hi again

Not sure where they went, but you didnt have to move far, say like the next village - I was only looking at Ticehurst itself, not the surrounding area.

By the time of the 1851 census, there were 2 Cruttenden families back in Ticehurst as well as some 16 people with the Wenham surname.

Hi

Have just looked at the 1811 census for Ticehurst only (again it survives) and low and behold there are no Cruttendons or Wenhams.

In the 1841 census for Ticehurst, there are 3 entries for Cruttenden but none for Wenham

Strange is it not

that all these records survive....the families seem to move around a  bit don't they? James Wenham 1841 born in Waldron married a Mary Ann from Biddenden and moved there. so at least we know where he went...

Hi yet again,
I'm still stuck with Joseph Wenham born 1747  in Etchingham, you are such a mine of information any records from Etchingham at your disposal so we can find his parents, and you have already told me that his parents are not mentioned in the  marriage lines.
But then  I thought that when I was working on my father's side, got back to 1630 and thought that was it and then via Roots have been give access to Church records so who knows I might be able to find the next generation back down the line.
regards Meg

Meg

This time you have got me - I have nothing on Etchingham at Home other than the 1841 and 1851 census - about 100 years out of date for you.

I will be going to the East Sussex Records Office again in the next couple of weeks - keep your eye on the Sussex Boards for me posting the date that I am going - then slap in your request from the parish registers of Ticehurst & Etchingham
