Hi,
I desperately need a look-up for Elizabeth Brown in the 1861 High Laver census. She was illegitimate and has been a real pain. I'm convinced that she is related to Martha Brown (witness on her marriage certificate). Elizabeth Brown was 19yrs old in Oct 1872 - born in High Laver. I wonder if George Brown was her grandfather?
Thanks.
Kris.

I've now received a transcript of the 1861 census entry - seems she was living with her grandparents, but a look-up in the 1851 census may just reveal the identity her mother.
Elizabeth shouldn't have been born then, but I wonder if there is a young unmarried daughter within a couple of years of illegitimate hanky-panky in the straw fields? Bet she was born in the summer! Randy old farmers
Her grandparents were Sarah and George Brown of High Laver.
Thanks very much!

Hi,
Is this the family in the 1871 census?
Name Age in 1871 Birthplace Relationship Civil Parish County/Island Benjamin Brown 15 High Laver, Essex, England Boarder High Laver Essex Eliza Brown 47 High Laver, Essex, England Daughter High Laver Essex Elizabeth Brown 18 High Laver, Essex, England Niece High Laver Essex George Brown 66 High Laver, Essex, England Head High Laver Essex George Brown 28 High Laver, Essex, England Son High Laver Essex Sarah Brown 67 High Laver, Essex, England Wife High Laver Essex
Is it possible that Eliza (aged 47) is the mother of your Elizabeth? She was unmarried, George (28) was widowed, Sarah was blind.
According to the 1871 census there was a Martha Brown (b. Matching - very close to High Laver) aged 21 working as a servant. Is this your Martha?
Regards
Paula

me again....
from the freeBMD i've found these people's births....
Births Mar 1850 ~~~~~~~~ Brown Martha Ongar 12 182
~~~~~~~~ Births Mar 1852 ~~~~~~~~ Brown Elizabeth Ongar 4a 59
~~~~~~~~ Births Dec 1852 ~~~~~~~~ Brown Elizabeth Ongar 4a 51
It may be worth spending £7 and ordering Martha's birth certificate online.

Thanks for the info.
I've already got a copy of the 1871 census and I'm confused by the fact that her relationship to the head, George Brown, was given as 'niece', yet in 1861 she was his 'grand daughter'. Perhaps the two terms were interchangeable at the time. Anyway, I've ordered a copy of the birth cert for DEC qtr 1852 Eliza Brown. I may do the same for Martha Brown as well, because she is named as a witness on Elizabeth's marriage cert.
A similar question regarding to her husbands side of the family.
In 1871 high laver, essex census --------- --------------------------------
Ann Surridge, 67 deaf Walter " ", son, 39 William W " " Gson, 14
but...
1861 census ----------------
Ann Surrage Boarder, 50 Walter " " boarder son, 29 Alfred " " boarder son, 8, Hatfield Broad Oak William " " boarder son, 5
I'm interested in Alfred Surridge (middle name James). He was also illegitimate and supposedly living with an uncle and aunt in 1871.
Is Ann his grandmother? William is her son in 1861 and then her grandson in 1871. Alfred James's birth certificate gives his mother's name as Eliza Surridge. Yet another common name!
Regards,
Kris.
