Good question - pity nobody will be able to answer it successfully. Bristol always seemed to be  described as in Somerset-Gloucestershire. Old maps skilfully avoided the issue by painting the border up to and out of the city but never showing on one side or the other. However, in 1837 Bristol was firmly in Glos. as a registration district and by 1887 it was recognized as "a county on its own". Since then, although it has moved around administratively it has never been seen as  a part of Somerset.

Bristol - which county?
« Reply #3 on: Saturday 11 March 06 21:49 GMT (UK) »

Can anyone tell me which county Bristol was in c.1840 and earlier?  It seems to swap between Somerset and Gloucester according to the records I have.

Thanks.

It was in Gloucestershire in 1834.  The river Avon formed the county boundary.

Bedminster, Bristol, was in Somerset 1841.  Just to confuse us all!

Bedminster is of course on the Somerset side of the River Avon which as I said was the county boundary.

Looking for opinions on how I should interpret this:

1841 Census Bristol, Somerset H0107/375/36/26
Joseph WALTERS was not born in the county (unconfirmed suspicion that he was born in Stroud GLS), wife and all 5 children born in county (the 2nd&3rd listed children are known to have been born in Stroud)
Do this family believe that they are in GLS? Does this prove that Joseph was not born in SOM? or not born in GLS?
