Good question - pity nobody will be able to answer it successfully. Bristol always seemed to be described as in Somerset-Gloucestershire. Old maps skilfully avoided the issue by painting the border up to and out of the city but never showing on one side or the other. However, in 1837 Bristol was firmly in Glos. as a registration district and by 1887 it was recognized as "a county on its own". Since then, although it has moved around administratively it has never been seen as a part of Somerset.

It was in Gloucestershire in 1834. The river Avon formed the county boundary.

Bedminster is of course on the Somerset side of the River Avon which as I said was the county boundary.
