2nd Cousins etc
« on: Sunday 09 April 06 00:28 UTC (UK) »

I seem to have a gap in my education.  Embarrassed

I know that children of our parents siblings are our cousins but can any one define 'second cousin' for me.

Thanks and regards

Hi Andy,
I think you have to go one up, to your parent's uncles and aunties, then down to find your second cousins. But not an expert on this Smiley

Best wishes

Hi Tony

Glad it's not just me that finds it confusing. (Along with the expression 'once removed')

I believe that your children and those of your first cousin are second cousins, their children are third cousins, and so on!!!

Your mum and dad's cousins are your first cousins once removed.

I think I'm right!!  Cool  Huh

Phew!!  Thanks for confirming that, Carmela, it gets very confusing sometimes!

Kelly, that's a great chart, thank you for the link.  It should solve all arguments!!  I will download it.

It's descendants of common grandparents - first cousins
descendants of common grt grandparents - second cousins
descendants of grt grt grandparents - 3rd cousins
etc., etc.

The 'removed' bit is when you are not on the same generation level i.e. my father's second cousin and I are second cousin's once removed.

Thanks for the link Kelly. I have printed it off for future reference.

Take both people back to the same generation:  each movement back a generation is the number of times removed.

Find the common ancestor of that genration and count the "g"s.  That indicates the first , second etc. cousin.

grandparents first cousin
great grandparents 2Gs  second cousins etc.

How I work it is this way

Common Grandparents - 1st cousin
       "      G Grandparents  - 2nd cousin
       "     GG Grandparents  -  3rd cousin
       "    GGG Grandparents  - 4th cousin

and so on

The once removed is you and your cousins children, Twice removed is you and their children and so on

Hello

I am wondering whether there is a difference to how the US and UK define relations too.

I am from the UK and I would call my relations like this.

Same generation as me = cousin, 2nd  cousin,  3rd cousin etc.

One generation up = aunty, 2nd aunty 3rd aunty etc.

One generation down = niece, 2nd niece 3rd niece etc.

I think this explains the ‘once removed’ I get on American software.

Oh yes, I forget.

Twice removed or three time removed here would mean grand then great grand.

So I could have a great aunt, my grandmother’s sister.

I could have a great grand aunt.   Who would be my great grandmother’s sister.

And so on.

In the UK your mother's first cousin is your first cousin once removed.  Would it be any different in the US?  If so what do you call the relationship?
