Death Cert Question *COMPLETED*
« on: Sunday 17 May 09 18:40 UTC (UK) »

When a woman dies, her certificate shows something like

"wife of John SMITH"
or
"widow of George BROWN"
or
"daughter of James WHITE"

If she were unmarried, would it say "a single woman"?

Hi GeoffE

I have certificates that state 'Spinster' or 'Spinster daughter of' and then the father's name.  These particular certificates are from the 1930s-40s.  One dating back to 1900 says 'singlewoman'.  So yes!

I wonder if it has something to do with who registered the death.  The 1900 death was registered by the manager from where she worked.  The ones I have from the 30s/40s were registered by family members.

Regards

Pip
