Annie Gardner was born c 1860 in Benfieldside Consett Co Durham. Approx date and birthplace is from later census return. In 1883 she married Thomas Bell who was from Slaley Nothumberland. I am having real trouble finding details of her birthand her parents identities.
Can anyone help please.
Thanks in anticipation
Andy

Hi Andy,
The marriage details are as follows:
Jun qtr 1883 - Co. Durham Vol 10a Page 517 - Thomas Bell & Annie Gardner.
If you order a copy of the marriage certificate it should give you her father's name, and hopefully details of when and where she was born.
I will just have a quick browse through the earlier census.

I tried to Taffy, quoting those details but got a reply saying that there was not trace of the marriage, cost me a few quid and told me nothing.
Its the first time I have had a problem like that.
Thought perhaps someone might have parish records for the area.
Thanks for your help Taffy
Regards
Andy

Have you tried contacting the local records office with the dates and names and see what they come up with?

It was the GRO Taffy. Can you get certificates from local office online or do you have to visit?
Thanks

Never tried from the Durham area to be honest Andy, unless anyone else knows? Might be worth Googling the records office and giving them a ring to see if they can help.
Most local offices I have dealt with are quite friendly and willing to advise you as much as possible.
By the way, I have searched earlier census returns and can't find a match. The only common occurrence is Annie Gardner born in 1857 in Lamesley. I don't know the area very well to know if this is close enough to be a possible.

On the GRO index both George Barrass and Thomas Bell have the same numbers
What comes up on the Durham County Council site is that Thomas Bell married an Elizabeth Thistlewaite or Howe (one is a maiden name)

Getting more confused by the minute!
Thomas Bell was definately married to a lady called Annie who was born in Benfieldside, I got this from census return.
I got the marriage date from a family bible, exact date is illegible.
More questions than answers it seems.
I will try to get the certificate for the 1860 birth and see if it is for Benfieldside.
Thank you very much everyone for your help
Andy

Well you could just get a birth certificate from one of the children to find the mother's name. I found a good candidate in Robert William Bell 1883 Sept ¼ Lanchester 10a 314. Have a reference check done. Put the father's name for the reference check. If the certificate has Robert William as a child with a father of Thomas you will get a cert there that will have the mother's name. The cert will cost you more but if is there you will have the correct one. If it does not pan out you are only out £4.00 and they will refund you £7.00. Correct one will then cost you £11.00.
Right now it idoes not look like the DCC site is working well as there were no children born in 1882-1890 with the last name of Bell in the Durham Northern or Eastern districts--and that cannot be true. Otherwise you could get a reference number from them and write and they could verify the parents names--if those are the ones you name. They will not tell you who the parents are if they do not match.

They haven't made much progress in the area in a few years. I thought that their would be past 1881 by now in ther indexing.
I suppose the Durham Northern office in Stanley could be written to and tell them you are looking for a Robert William Bell born somewhere around July, Aug and Sept. Or could be as early as the last 2 weeks of June or so. But it would probably not be in there computer system.
