Hi all
I was hoping for some help with my HATHORN/HAWTHORN line. I have John Hathorn marrying Mary Hanning in Girthon 1824, and 6 children to them. I am now trying to find John's parents.
The marriage entry is as follows "John Hathorn, Upper Flerock and Mary Hanning, Cally, 15 April 1824"
I have John HATHORN in the 1851 census with wife and 1 daughter, living in Back street, Gatehouse of Fleet, aged 55 born Sorbie Wigtownshire.
Also in the 1851 census is Agnes HAWTHORN residing at "Upper Flilarg" in Girthon. (I have no evidence that this Agnes is related in any way, it just seemed like a big coincidence.)
I can't find either of the places named and was wondering if anyone with local knowledge could identify them. Is it a case of the same name being garbled or two completely different places?
Does anyone have access to the 1841 census that could clarify this for me?
Kirsty

Hi Kirsty
The Agnes HAWTHORN you refer to in 1851 at address "Upper Flilang", in Kirkcudbrightshire Head: Agnes HAWTHORN 80, Farmer, b Whithorn, Wigtownshire Son: Samuel HAWTHORN 38, Farmers Son, b Sorbie, Wigtownshire Dau: Margaret HAWTHORN 25, Farmers Daur, b Girthon, Kirkcudbright Grandson: Andrew HAWTHORN 13, Scholar, b Kelton, Kirkcudbright
In 1841: (Ages rounded) Upper Flerock, Girthon, Kirkcudbrightshire Agnes McDONALD 70, Farmer - N William HAWTHORN 35, Ag Lab - N Samuel HAWTHORN 30, AG Lab - N David HAWTHORN 25, Ag Lab - Y Margaret HAWTHORN 20 - Y Andrew HAWTHORN 3 - Y
It certainley looks more than a coincidence - If this is your John HATHORNs mother it's cetainley luck that she appears to be using her maiden name in this Census (quite a common practice with Scottish widows) .
I see your John in 1841, as HATHORN and in 1861 at Cross St Gatehouse I think, as HAWTHORN - but not sure if you already have these? In 1841 there are 5 children in the house, the eldest of them being Agnes age 15.
In 1861: Flowerturg??, Girthon, Kirkcudbrightshire Head: Samuel HAWTHORN 50, Farmer of 30 acres, b Sorbie Wigtownshire Sister: Margaret HAWTHORN 35, b Girthon
In 1871: Back Street, Gatehouse, Girthon (Household Shcedule 36) Head: Samuel HAWTHORN 60, b Gatehouse, Labourer .....? . b Gatehouse, Kirkcudbrightshire
Your John is at Back Street Gatehouse in 1871, Household Schedule 28.
Cheers AMBLY

Thanks to everyone for their help!
I have found the address as "High Flilarg" on a 1926 Bartholomew map from the NLS website. It is due north of Gatehouse, just beyond the right hand fork in the road at what is now known as Fleuchlang.
Ambly - I didn't have those census records so thank you. That should give me a good starting point to go and hunt for Parish records etc.
Then on to hunt for Mary's family!
