Oakley Farm, Mottisford/Mottisfont
« on: Tuesday 15 April 08 16:21 BST (UK) »

I wonder if anyone has any information about the history of Oakley Farm. It appears it was in the possession of my family in 1830.  I have done the usual Google, TNA and A2A searches with little success.  Like some other pieces of property, it was probably used as security for a loan.

You never know!

Thanks

Have you tried the Hampshire CALM database?

http://calm.hants.gov.uk/DServeA/search.htm

I can see a lease and release of Oakley Farm dated 1831 plus other info including plans.

Mottisford is the old name for Mottisfont

Bearkat!

That is absolutely brilliant! Thank you.  I went to the Hampshire Record Office website and emailed them, but I didn't know about the CALM database.  Presumably it is not yet referenced by A2A.
I'm sure there is other Hampshire data I am looking for which I will find there too, so you have really made my day.

For Oakley Farm I found:

Ref 11M70/B1/2/54

Lease and release of Oakley Farm, Mottisfont  4-5 Jun 1799
(i) Walter Smythe of Bambridge, esq & (ii) Louis Bazalgette of Middx, gent

- so I know my ggggfr owned it in 1799, and whom he rented it to.  I even have references to Walter Smythe in my gggggfr's bank statements.

Terrific!

Many thanks,
Charles

Yes indeed!

I see from looking at records in CALM for Mottisford that the Sloane family also owned land there.
There also seems to be a connection between the Sloane family and the Mill family.  This is interesting, as my gggggfr later bought South Stoneham house in about 1804.  It suggests he knew these people and places much earlier than I thought.

It gets better!  Walter Smythe of Brambridge was Maria Fitzherbert's father.  She also had a brother called Walter (Wat) who seems to be the one we are dealing with.  Louis Bazalgette was Prince George's tailor, as well as lending him and his brothers money.  The possibilities for uncovering intriguing information here are very interesting I think!
