Dear All,
I would welcome any information concerning the occurrence of George RAPER in Thirsk in the 1851 and/or 1841 censuses. George was a cabinet maker or joiner by trade.
I hope that in 1841, one of the children is Frances Raper ... my g-g-grandmother ... she married in 1843, but gave an address in London ... seems like she'd moved to the big city as a domestic servant.
Many thanks
Tim

Hi Reedy,
Thanks very much for your help. Neither of these is Frances' father, both because of age and occupation. But I'm willing to bet that the first one is her brother - named after his father! Certainly worth having a peek at his marriage certificate, which seems likely to have been post July '37 (FreeBMD is in one of its "Busy" moods right now). In which case, if the father is George the Joiner, it's certainly her brother.
I had assumed that Frances had toddled off to London on her own, but perhaps she went down with her parents, which is why they seem to be missing from Thirsk.
Cheers
Tim

Immediately after posting my reply, FreeBMD decided to cooperate! And, indeed, there's a Dec 1837 marriage of a George Raper in THirsk. I'll order it.
Cheers
Tim
