Hi there
I've just downloaded a document from the National Archives relating to the estate of my earliest (so far ) ancestor Henrie Dewing who died in 1638.
I should've realised it would be in Latin!
Is there anyone out there skilled in transcribing/translating old documents??? I think this is beyond my meager skills.
Tks, Jane

Jane,
Are you sure its Latin? Old handwriting can be really difficult but it gets easier with practice. I have read/transcribed lots of old documents - sometimes with difficulty I must admit - but if they are in Latin, that is an added problem. If you don't know what sort of things it might say, then it makes life doubly hard. Can you scan a small section of it for us to see? I wouldn't want to say I can help only to discover that it's beyond me.

Hi
I'm pretty sure is Latin. With some difficulty I managed to transcribe the will of this individual but being a court document this one seems to be in Latin. If it was printed I could probably manage with a Latin dictionary and grammar book in hand but the added difficulty of the hand writting makes a different kinda challenge!
Pic deleted - sorry

Thanks Nell, Ive seen the palaeography one but haven't previously had the need to look at the Latin one! I'll give it a go.
I might see if I can unearth a suitable Latin/History scholar at Uni.
Cheers, Jane
