Ernest -
could he have been brought up by another family - unofficil adoption - and not be with Louisa (plus possible dad) at all in 1891 and 1901 at all. Even could be under adoptive families name. Adoptive father being the well off engineer in the family stories.
On reaching teenage years he is told/finds out the truth, ie that he is not Ernest Bloggs (or whatever) and that enginner and Mrs Engineer are not his real parents, so he runs away, and reverts to what he has discovered is his real name (ie Ernest Onley).

That's a conclusion some of us have come to Liz........Family history has him being taught at home by tutors then being sent away to boarding school from where he ran away never to go back home.   It's during this time in boarding school that his adopted sister died.  But, not knowing the time frame............    Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

Could Mr Engineer be his real father and Mrs Engineer his step mother........could the adopted daughter be Mr Engineers real daughter brought into the family........so many variables it could drive you mad        Undecided

My gut feeling - based on nothing really except.... well ... my gut! and of no significance,  being a newcomer to the Ernest plight...
is that Ernest was illeg son of Louisa, father not known - Louisa of course may (or may not?) have known at the time but as far as records go no one will ever know.
Mr and Mrs Engineer are adoptive parents. (You mention adoptive sister, do we have a name for her?) It is them he runs away from.

So - boarding school. If born 1887, he would be at boarding school in 1901, probably.
IF he kept his original Christian name but just took Mr Engineers surname during his childhood years, then he should be findable on 1901 census?
(Guess I am going over old ground)

Liz.........he was illegitimate, no father on BC.  No name for adopted sister, my aunt did know once, but she's forgotten now (she's 94 and can barely remember her own name!! ) 

I'm tending to go the route of natural father and step mother.......I could be way off, but who knows!!!

OK...........that Louisa with Charles Barnett is mine........got that cert.  He was married before and found all that family, no Ernest

Louisa and Sam Kightley.........he died and she married.......somebody, can't remember his name........then he died.  Found that family..........no Ernest

Hadn't found Louie..............I'll follow that, see what comes up.

I still reckon little Ernest never saw Louisa and the Onley's again, but was brought up either as Ernest X or a completely different name, with adoptive parents (the dad being an engineer). He never really settled with them. They sent him to boarding school. He ran away. He was told/discovered he was really Ernest Onley. He then used that name from then onwards.

Hence I was trying to find an Ernest in 1901 as a pupil at a boarding school, but had no success

But sounds right with the Charles Abbott.......only thing he's a school master rather than an engineer.
