Re: Ernest Abbott Onley born 1887
« Reply #15 on: Friday 14 April 06 12:30 BST (UK) »

Searching for the father of Ernest Abbott Onley born 10/10/1887 Dec 1/4 V:1b P:372   Mother Louisa Elizabeth Onley. Address: 28 Edinburgh Cottages, Islington.  Occupation: Machinist.

Searches have been made for an affiliation order, but no bastardy records have survived for Clerkenwell (which is the nearest court).  Local newspapers have been searched for court reports with no result on bastardy cases.

According to family (93 year old Aunt)  Ernest came from a well off family with his father being an engineer.   He ran away from home in his early teens and never saw his parents again.

There is a bit of a coincidence with the birth of a Louisa Onley registered Dec 1/4 1887 Islington.  V:1b P: 371 which is the page before Ernest.   Her death is registered Dec 1/4 1887 Islington.  V:1b P: 245   I wonder if it is toooo much of a coincidence!!

There you have it . .   . ..Lady Di, I would willingly take on one of your spare ancestors      Cheesy

Thanks for your help everybody

Hi Barbara,

Sorry, I only have questions - no answers  Roll Eyes

Do you have the birth cert for Louisa Onley in 1887?

What parents names are listed there?

Do you think that she may be Ernest's twin?

The Abbott as a second name is raaaather interesting  Undecided

Have you found a marriage for Louisa Elizabeth (something) to a (something) Onley?

Have you looked for a birth for Louisa Elizabeth Onley?

This probably won't help but ... I hadn't come across the name of Only before until recently I discovered my 93 year old's (godmother in N.Z.) maiden name was Only, daughter of an Ernest Only and Nellie Kitchen. They came from Bolton which I notice is one of your places albeit not with Only.

She told me that the Onlys were a 'stage family', I think Ernest might have been a stage manager and Nellie, a performer of some sort but I am almost sure that she said the Olny family had been involved with the theatre for generations.

regards,

Lindsay

I haven't got a cert for Louisa 1887 yet ( just can't afford it at the moment    Cry  )   There was never any mention of a twin but it does seem rather suspect doesn't it!!

I think Abbott could be his fathers name, with possibly Ernest as his first name, but a search of Ernest Abbotts doesn't have young Ernest or Louisa anywhere.

There is a listing in the London Directory of a John Abbot (with one 'T') as a civil engineer, but no other Abbotts as any sort of engineer.

Louisa Elizabeth born 30 June 1865.  57 Brittania Row, Islington

I can't find a marriage for Louisa Elizabeth with the husband as an engineer.

The only family of Onley's in the proximity of Edinburgh Cottages in the 1881 census are William Samuel Onley (Enameller) and Hannah Maria Nee Edwards of 9a Church passage and then to Edinburgh Cottages in 1891 where they are listed in the census under Orley.

So I'm stumped      Undecided

Just seen your reply Lindsay and your godmother must be Marion, she's my Aunt and she will insist the name is Only without the E and that she put the E in when Ernest was put as Onley on his birth cert . . . . .  Ah well, small world isn't it??

Hi Barbara,

My hubby's grandfather was always known to have been an engineer. When I finally found the records - he was a tinsmith!

So don't always take someone elses word for an occupation. Variations in occupation have been "challenging" in my family.

Certainly looks like the Abbott has some meaning - suggest, when $'s permit, that you have a look at the other birth record (even only to rule out any possible connection)

Regards

No! Unbelievable! What a coincidence, yes my godmother is Marion and also by sheer coincidence her late husband, Donald was my half 2C1R which I only discovered when I started doing genealogy.

Where do you live?Huh

I went to NZ in February to visit her, she was showing me her Only tree then, she has a lot of info ....

Is the Ernest that you are looking for Marion's father?Huh Please PM me with your email address and I will try to help.

regards,

Lindsay

Thanks Di, that's certainly a good point about the tinsmith, my Abbott will probably turn out to be a garbage collector or something along that line           Cheesy

Thanks also from me, Sharon.  Funnily enough I was going to put a post on the common room for some advice on finding my ancestor who has done a Houdini.  I didn't even know that the brick wall link existed.

I'll go down that route instead.

Good Luck Barbara.

Coincidentally, in our local paper today there was a funeral notice for a John Albert Onley, late of "Bulala", Roma, who died at the age of 75.

It's an uncommon name.  Be funny if this was a relative of yours, Barbara!

I've been searching for a persons father for what seems like half a lifetime ( it isn't really, it just seems that way )with no luck whatsoever.
I'm just wondering how long do you keep looking for somebody before you say enough!!           Undecided
