I promise I will Barbara. Where was she in 1871. I've managed to get my grt grandmother working as a laundress in a stately home just a year before grandad's sister was born and the family said it was the same father.

I might have to do it tonight though - husband's calling me to lunch Wink

Can't find her in '71 but the family were in Lower Brunswick Terrace in '61. Louisa was born in 1865.

Congrats on finding out about your grt gandmother. Wish I could find out about Louisa and what happened to her Undecided

A William Ernest Onley birth registered Sept q, 1886, Islington and his death March, 1887, Islington Huh

How does the Bolton bit fit in?

Hi Gadget . . . . Have we come down from the clouds yet?? I'll order in the fluffy slippers for you, but the tiara is Su's domain Cheesy

There's another Louisa E in Northampton as well, she married Samuel Kightley 1889, Sam died 1890 and she married John Richard Tooby, but there's no sign of an Ernest . . . .. Undecided

Onley seemed to be quite common around the London area, so it's difficult locating the right one.

Bolton is where Ernest and Nellie (Kitchen) moved to in 1920 - Nellie's family were from Bolton.

Well, I checked up on Louisa's family. Ernest was not with her two elder brothers, who were both married and living in Islington at the time. I also checked 28 Edinburgh Cattages and there doesn't seem to be a likely candidate. I'm sure you've done all this already but another pair of eyes and all that. They weren't wealthy, so if your elderly Aunt is right then he was either:

Adopted - no legal formalities in those days - so he could eventually find out who his biologicals were/was

Taken in by his father - who could have any name under the son Huh

Staying will other relatives - but who

They didn't declare him in the census

Off to have another look.......................

It's really appreciated . . . the other pair of eyes I mean. Mine are going gooooooogly trying to find Ernest.

It's a real puzzle as my Aunt is adamant they were well off and Ernest had a tutor until he went to a private school from where he ran away!! There was an adopted sister who died in her early teens but no natural siblings.

But. . . . . . I know you can do it Gadget, you have the tiara to live up to now . .. . bet you're chuffed about that, I would be Cheesy

Private school - now that's probably where he'd be in 1901 - if he was in one Huh

On his marriage cert to Nellie - what address did he give, what occupation, and was father blank???

I've been told the adopted sister was older than Ernest, but nobody can remember her name Cry

Marriage cert has:

247 Great College Street

Music Hall Artiste

He put himself as his father but put carpenter as occupation. This was amended in 1950 to - Quote: Col 2 for Only read Only otherwise Onley. Col 7 Omit Ernest Only. Col 8 Omit Carpenter. Corrected on the 4th
September 1950.

Witnesses were Thomas Charles Beaumont and Charles R Wren.

Oh . . . . I've just realised, he put his age down as 27 to Nellie's 23 . . . . . That would make it an 1885 birth!! But there's no other Ernest Abbott Onley's anywhere to be found . .. probably not significant at all really Undecided

This marriage cert, is it the only source of the name Ernest Abbott Onley?
Think I know where Great College Street is - sister lives Bloomsbury - 1912 - music hall artiste.

Nellie was a singer/dancer/actress - or so we've been told. She did have a beautiful soprano voice, I think Ernest was a set manager. I did put a post up before and got some replies - emailed everyone and everything to do with the theatre and archives and came up with zilch . . ... . might just go back and resurrect it, see what comes up.

Marriage cert, birth cert both say Ernest Abbott Onley - plaque on coffin said Ernest Abbott Onley!! Dad's bc says Ernest Onley. Aunts bc says Ernest ONLY - no E.

My heads getting sore from banging against the wall Undecided
