I promise I will Barbara. Where was she in 1871. I've managed to get my grt grandmother working as a laundress in a stately home just a year before grandad's sister was born and the family said it was the same father.
I might have to do it tonight though - husband's calling me to lunch

I'll really have a go Barbara - you helped me to my tiara - by the time you get up I might just have found something. I like having a good problem to solve

Hi Barbara
Just got in from a long 'afternoon' of partying - hunt the egg and all that. As I was driving, I was on lemonade
I've now copied and pasted all the relevant bits from this thread into my notepad and will read, digest and see if I can come up with something.
Hope so

How does the Bolton bit fit in?
Still thinking long and hard

Well, I checked up on Louisa's family. Ernest was not with her two elder brothers, who were both married and living in Islington at the time. I also checked 28 Edinburgh Cattages and there doesn't seem to be a likely candidate. I'm sure you've done all this already but another pair of eyes and all that. They weren't wealthy, so if your elderly Aunt is right then he was either:
Adopted - no legal formalities in those days - so he could eventually find out who his biologicals were/was
Taken in by his father - who could have any name under the son
Staying will other relatives - but who
They didn't declare him in the census
Off to have another look.......................

Adopted sister - mm - do you know if she was older or younger? Private school - now that's probably where he'd be in 1901 - if he was in one On his marriage cert to Nellie - what address did he give, what occupation, and was father blank???

Soooooooooooooooooooo...................
Good job it was Charles Wren and not Christopher or I'd begin to think they were stage names??? This marriage cert, is it the only source of the name Ernest Abbott Onley? Think I know where Great College Street is - sister lives Bloomsbury - 1912 - music hall artiste.
Right! - theatre billboards!! I think it might be worth another thread - you'd better ask while I chug on
