'Nellie' could have been?
« on: Friday 20 June 08 16:46 BST (UK) »

I have one photograph, in a collection which has no names, dates or titles, of a lady. On the reverse it says 'Nellie Fisher'
I have many Fishers in censuses and on certificates, but no Nellie.
Could she have been 'Helen'?
Any other suggestions?

Hi Kooky

there are always lots of threads on here of this sort - what could a name be 'short' for?

The conclusions are always the same -
a) it might be 'short' for something, in this case the most likely names are Ellen, Eleanor or Helen
b) It might be given as a name in its own right (my grandma was Nellie)
c) It might be a pet name and bear absolutely no resemblance to their real name at all.

Sorry not to be very helpful!
But it might save going through the whole rigmarole again of everyone chipping in with an instance of a Nellie in their tree who fits one of those categories ... and several pages later we all come to thjat same conclusion again!

Hope you find who she is and where she fits in to your Fishers.

My grandmother was christened Eleanor, called Nellie and loathed it.
My great aunt was christened Nellie and so was stuck with it!  Grin

Great Aunt Rose was always called Nell. Never found out why. Rose is so much prettier.

I think I may have spotted Nellie in a wedding photo posted for me in Jan. The thread was 'Name the place for Kooky' ! Roll Eyes She may be the lady at the right hand end of the 2nd row, in front of the bushes.

Kooky

Sorry I cant link the threads!
