Joseph Nicholls, picture taken 1860s, M. Quillish, photographer, 8 Soho St,Islington, Liverpool~ in uniform~ http://community.webshots.com/photo/549458762/2829760810082135343PfYSmo (Joseph is my great great grandfather)
I think that he may be a volunteer(shako hat). He has an artillery pin on sleeve. He may have been in India in 1850s, and again around 1868 and 1869 (when my great great grandfather Robert Ashley Nicholls, was born ( July 1868/9). He was back in Liverpool in 1870 (child born in December). I would like to be able to identify what regiment he was in. I am hoping someone might have some ideas. (Looked at badge with "loop", looks close to 9th Lancers-Queens Royal)
I was able to find Joseph in 1851 census in Liverpool (he was listed as Josh Nichols) age 22, Dale Street, occupation painter. I have not been able to find him in 1861 census, or a marriage record (yet) for Joseph Nicholls and Susannah Smith. I found him in 1871 in England~ Joseph Nicholls and Susannah were living in North Meols, Lancashire County, England. Joseph Nicholls was listed as head of family, age 42, painter, born in Liverpool, Lancashire County, England. Susannah, his wife, was age 38, born in Tranmere, Cheshire County, England Children listed were Adalaide Nicholls, age 4 and Robert age 3 (both born in Southport, Lancashire County, England).I found Adelaide in BMD, but not Robert. Robert's marriage and death records (and census records) in the USA all list Benares India as place of birth.

it's very difficult to identify the badge, every regiment used the same design of an eight pointed star with a victorian crown on top
the hat it sits on is a shako ( an albert shako i think) , the pom -pom on top would date it roughly between 1855 and 1883

Susan,
He is not dressed as a cavalryman, so is unlikely to belong to a lancer regiment.
I have zoomed up the badge which you say is an artillery pin, but it is too indistinct to make out. Have you seen this badge elsewhere described as such?
I reckon the key to finding out his regiment is identifying the 'artillery pin' beyond doubt, and also making out the number on his shako badge. If some digital photographic boffin could play around with the contrast on this latter item it may be possible to read it. And then you'll be in with a chance...
Good luck Leofric

the pin is a marksmans badge,he could be in the 95th [derbyshire]regt of foot, their cap badge is very similar to that one,his rifle is from around the crimean/indian mutiny period,1854/1860,the rifle looks like an 1853 enfield percussion rifled musket, mack

Thank you for your ideas/thoughts on the picture.... and Mike, WOW......what a difference in the picture! Thank you! You are a magician! Now, if I could identify the badge on the hat!
My mother has the original photo (I think). She made 5x7 copies of some old photos for me, when she saw that I was interested in them. I am going to ask if I may borrow it and try to find more detail in the badge.
I am also trying to locate the birth/christening record of my great grandfather in India in 1868/9. I am hoping it lists whatever regiment Joseph was in at the time.
I will let you know if I find anything out!
Thanks again Sincerely Susan

Sorry Salty
But he ain't the 8th of Foot. If the problem (at RC) is solved I can upload a photo if wished, but I have several of the 8th and the arm decoration is not that as this photo.......although I understand all cap badges of the period had the 6 star and something on top
Sorry too Susan Wendi

Hello.
There is a number in the center of the badge denoting a regiment of foot, and maybe it is the 32, if so then the 'Duke of Cornwall Light Infantry'.
If you can scan the original at 600dpi it may show up a lot better.
Mike.
