Lookup request- Torbet in Thornhills, Stirling
« on: Saturday 15 April 06 16:03 BST (UK) »

Elizabeth Torbet was my wifes grandmother. We know nothing about her side of the family except that she was born in 1926 in Thornhill, Stirling. Any information, especially her parents details, that anyone can find out will be very much appreciated.

Many thanks.

Hi Wayne

Unless you are lucky enough that somebody responds to your post with direct knowledge of Elizabeth Torbet's family, you are probably going to have to apply to the General Register Office of Scotland (GRO) for a copy of her 1926 birth certificate to enable you to begin your research into her family. On-line records for births are governed by the 100 year rule and are only available from Scotlands People at http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk up to 1905 (marriages are up to 1930/deaths up to 1955/censuses up to 1901).

You should look at this site http://www.gro-scotland.gov.uk/famrec/index.html which explains how to apply for a more recent birth certificate.

Before begining your searches, so you should also have a look at the posts on this site on how to optimise your use of Scotlands People and where to start with Scottish research (you will find these at the top of the general Scotland section).

Good luck in your searches.

Monica
