Jonathan Pitch Baptism
« on: Saturday 15 April 06 16:08 UTC (UK) »

Hi,

I m trying to find a baptism for Jonanathan Pitch supposedly born in Deptford Kent.  There is no sign of him prior to the 1891 census possibly due to him being the army, abroad maybe ?  His age is given as 42 but 5 years later in 1896 on his death certificate he was aged 52.

We have his army entry papers which state that he joined in 1858 aged 25 and that he was from Witham Essex. The 1861 census shows a Private Jonathan Pitch aged 27, born Witham Essex, based in Brompton, Gillingham, Kent.

This is a total mystery.  If anybody can help trace his possible baptism in Deptford???  I d be most grateful.

   Regards

Hi Nimrod

Have you already looked for an Essex baptism?

The children's birthplaces are muddled between 1891 and 1901 ................ which one is correct?

Hi,

Thanks for reply.  No I hav nt checked Essex yet, I will post on the Essex board shortly.   Yes the childeren s birthplaces are all muddled, whether they are accurate I can t say and the first born, William, we assume was illigitimate. Jonathan and Emily married in Camberwell in 1882 and William is given aged 11 in 1891.

I ve also checked the GRO indexes from 1837 to 1850 but can find no Jonathan Pitch anywhere unless of of course the surname was mispelled on the entry if there is one. Of course it could be he was never registered or he was indeed born before 1837.
