It may be too early to look at the fine details but we need to give them some consideration. Gerry (gmack) has kindly offered to lend a hand but the question is what should we be doing at this stage. Here is the PM received from Gerry.

Now here are some of the problems involved in the organisation end of things -
So far there are 40 or 50 people coming but there will probably be a lot more so we need to have time tables and things like that It will be a three day event and people will be making their own accommodation arrangements so that is not the problem. The problem is places where a reasonably large group of people can meet for a meal. You cannot walk off the street into a restaurant and say "There are 50 or 100 of us we would like a meal now please". These type of things have to be organised in advance. Similarly a room where where we can socialise in the evening and maybe have a dance and drink. Remember it is a three day event we are considering.
The same problem arises with a hall where we can listen to a speaker or possibly have discussion groups. At the moment there are 50 so lets say we tell some one we need a hall for 50 then in a couple of months the number rises to over 100 Will the person with the hall for 50 be able to accommodate 100 instead of 50? Then we will have to charge something to cover overheads.
I think it is better doing the organising of the Dublin event on the board rather than by sending private messages. Lets hope we have an extremely successful event .. then people in other areas will be able to refer to this board if they wish to organise an event on a similar scale.

Does Dublin University still let their rooms out and if so do they have catering on site and can they let their lecture rooms out. Just a thought

Thanks Pat, that is a great thought.
They would probably have little problem if we ask provisionally for a room for 50 people and go back a few months hence and ask for a larger room. When you say Dublin University I assume you mean TCD ...
or do you mean UCD?

I meant UCD. If you don't ask you don't get anywhere. You don't have to commit but it might give you an option. I think that they use to rent out the bedrooms to the tourists during holiday time. People can book their own rooms if they want to stay there and if we have the option for a lecture room and canteen or whatever it is all under one roof.

Hi Chris,
I just had a look at the accomodation at UCD and Trinity and UCD accomodation is just over half what Trinity charge. So I guess UCD would be the better choice and as the campus appears to be like a village I think it would meet every possible need.

The last post here was a couple of weeks ago. I have just spotted an attraction that may appeal to some members whilst they are in Dublin. Park your cars somewhere safe, use the Dart or a bus to the City centre
and go on the 1916 Historical Walking Tour of Dublin. This is a good opportunity to learn about the events surrounding the Easter Rising. http://www.1916rising.com

I've just come across this topic, and what a smashing idea !
Altough I've been to Ireland a few times on the old ancestor trail, (my Dunns were from Swinford, Co.Mayo and my McNultys probably also), exploring Dublin is something I've always wanted to do. However, summer 1997 seems such a long way off  . I'm an impatient Saggitarius you see, and we're not very good at waiting for things
Just the same, I know what you mean about planning in advance. We once booked a flight for a few days stay in Dublin, only to find that the US country singer, Garth Brookes, (who we'd never heard of  ) was performing there, and we couldn't get accommodation for love nor money. Anyway, it wasn't a problem, we just hired a car and toured along the South East coast instead, and it was just great .
Anyway, you can put my name down, I'm definitely interested in being shown around Dublin by a native Irishman.

Your name is on the list. I hope many others do the same thing as you and ask for their names to be added as soon as they spot this thread. Here is one of the places we might visit whilst in Dublin. I'm sure, like myself many of you would like at least one pint of good Guinness whilst listening to some traditional Irish music. Hiya Rob,
Thanks for your message. I added your name to the list. That was thoughtful giving details of the Doncaster Sheffield Airport Rob. I hope others follow your example and post details about the way they will be travelling to Ireland. If you have been to Ireland before folks please post as any information you can give will be extremely useful to those coming for the first time.
I altered my signature on my profile so that it advertises the RootsChat meet in Belfast and the one in Dublin next year. If people coming to this event or people who are supporting the event do not have signatures on their profiles at the moment would they consider advertising these events in this manner please. I think it is OK as we are advertising RootsChat events. There may be a banner at a later stage but at this stage every little helps.
Thanks to everyone planning to come and those who are giving the matter consideration but have not yet made up their minds. There is still plenty of time to have your names added to the list.
