Looking for some local knowlege here.
I have just recieved my great grandmothers birth certificate. From this I have found that her father Charles Watts is listed as a the manager of a coffee public house. The family lived at 29 Milford Street at the time of her birth, and so I assume he worked and lived in the same building.
Can anybody identify what may have stood at 29 Milford Street all those years ago, and what kind of area it was?

I looked at the Kelly's Directories for Salisbury and found the following:
1907 in the commercial section "Salisbury Coffee Public House Co. Lim. (George Harris, Sec) "The Phoenix" 29 Millford St &"The Three Cuppes" Fisherton St."
This was also in 1903, 1898, 1889, 1885, and 1880 - which just had "Salisbury Coffee House Co Limited (James Fox Lear, man) Milford STreet."
Also in Kelly's for 1889, 1885, 1880 and 1875 there is a listing: "Uphill, Henry Rising Sun Castle Street"
Langmead and Evan's Directory published in 1897 has
Salisbury Residents List
"Uphill, Geo, Phoenix Coffee Tavern, Milford ST."
Salisbury Street List
"Rising Sun Inn, Longman Mrs Charlotte, proprieter"
In a hand written piece of research on the Inns of Salisbury by Roland Graham Gordon is the following entry:
"The Rising Sun
Situate on the west side of Castle Street opposite Wyndham Road
1822 Alice Blake, 1834 Mr Lodge, 1836 Thos Buckett, 1842 James Lawes, 1850 Elizabeth Hull, 1867 Henry Uphill, 1900 Mrs Charlotte Longman."
The Rising Sun Inn was standing empty when we moved to Salisbury 15 years ago. It has been demolished - about 10 years ago.
29 Millford Street is still standing. It looks 18th century. I'll take a photo and email it to you if you would like. It's a tanning parlour at the moment.
Milford Street is in the centre of Salisbury, leading out to the eastern suburbs. I imagine it would have been one of the busier roads in and out of Salisbury, (as was Castle Street). Milford Street has several pubs, lots of shops. Some of the public houses are quite old. The Red Lion is at the town end of the road, and has been there since the 13th century - and old and respectable coaching inn. There are quite a few pubs and shops and other businesses listed in Milford Street in the directories for the period you are interested in.
Hope that helps
Julie
