« on: Sunday 16 April 06 05:42 BST (UK) »

Does anyone know what happened to Alice Elizabeth (nee Kenyon) and Thomas Norcross (and any children) who were born in Preston, Lancashire, England and lived in Nelson, New Zealand, around 1910-1914?  Thomas is listed as a timber merchant and a teacher of music (perhaps there was a son also called Thomas).

Have found - @ www.ncc.govt.nz/asp/cemeteries - that Verna Kenyon Norcross (died @ 3 months in 1913) and Mary Ann Norcross (died @23 years in 1911) buried in same grave in Wakapuaka cemetery in Nelson, along with Hilda Allena Dunn (died at 6 months June 1921), Alice Jane B Watts (no age given) in June 1966 and the ashes of Clarissa Ellen Lewis (died @79 june 2002) .  Would be grateful   for any info about the relationships of these people - especially if that can identify Alice and Thomas Norcross' children.

Thanks for any help

Hi

On this site:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sooty/nzefrohN.html
You will find mention:
Died: 1918 Mar 30, Service Nr: 56989  Private James Thomas NORCROSS , OIR / DOW /  France/  Son of Alice E. and the late Thomas Norcross, of 32, Weka St., Nelson, New Zealand  / FRANCE - DOULLENS COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION No.1

You will also find the same info on this site (which also says he was aged 38):
http://www.cwgc.org

So now you know Thomas was deceased before Mar 1918 and Alice was still living.

Cheers

I thought you may be interested in this wollongong ....

Doullens is a town of great historical interest, in the department of the Somme. It lies in the valley of the Authie, at the intersection of main roads from Albert, Amiens, Auxi-Le-Chateau, St. Pol, and Arras.

Doullens was Marshal Foch's headquarters early in the war, and the scene of the conference in March 1918, after which he assumed command of the Allied armies on the Western Front - from the summer of 1915 to March 1916, it was a junction between the French 10th Army on the Arras front and the British 3rd Army on the Somme. The Citadelle, overlooking the town from the South, was a French Military Hospital, and the rail head was used by both armies. In March 1916, the Arras front became British, and the 19th Casualty Clearing Station came to Doullens, followed by the 41st, the 35th and the 11th. By the end of 1916 these had given place to the third Canadian Stationary Hospital and the 2/1st Northumbrian Casualty Clearing Station, the former of which remained in the town until June 1918.

From February 1916, to April 1918 the British medical units continued to bury in the French Extension (No. 1) of the Communal Cemetery; and there lie in that grave yard 1,142 soldiers from the United Kingdom, 77 from New Zealand, 69 from Australia, 36 from Canada, 4 from Newfoundland, 3 from South Africa, and 1 from Guernsey; 2 native soldiers of the Indian Army and 2 of the British West Indies Regt; 1 British Civilian; and 13 German prisoners of war. In March and April 1918, the German advance and the desperate fighting on this front threw a severe strain on the Canadian Stationary Hospital; the Extension was filled, and new ground was occupied (Extension No. 2) on the opposite side of the Communal Cemetery.

Hi again

Check these links - a lady in the states is looking for NORCROSS in NZ too (unless it's you  Grin)

http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/NEW-ZEALAND/2000-01/0948105139
http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/LANCSGEN/1999-09/0937932104
looking into Thomas Barricot Norcross
who was born to Jane Alice Norcross in
New Plymouth in 1913.

In the NZ White pages, there is only a handful of NORCROSS listings.
One is in South Island, rest in North Island.  It might be worth trying to contact them since the name is apparently rare here?

Hi wollongong

Sorry about the delay in getting back to you, when I first saw the name Norcross it registered a bell, and I knew I had come across it somewhere before, and while sorting out things last night I finally found it, Edna Ruby Andrews who married Frederick Norcross was  the daughter of William Alfred Andrews and Annie Letitia Painton.  William Alfred Andrews is my greatgrandfathers brother.

Edna Ruby Andrews was born 1892 - died 17.8.1980 and is buried in Inglewood Taranaki cemetery. She married Frederick Norcross 16.9.1911
I am currently in contact with two grandchildren of Frederick and Edna's so if you want more information let me know.

 Dear Jericho

Thanks for your kind offer to refer my query to descendants of Frederick and Edna Norcross.  Sorry to take a while to reply - I have been trying to find the time to put together all the info we have already and identify questions your contacts may be able to help with.   I hope to get this done in the coming week.  It is turning out to be quite a puzzle.

So you have the 1881, 1891 and 1901 census records ?

And know roughly how old  Thomas and Alice/Elizabeth are ?

Makes things easier if you put their approx  ages on.

Out of all the above posts, I believe only the War record at the moment.
