Hi, Forgive me if you know this, but There are some wonderful books on this site www.gutenberg.orgI just typed in Lancashire and it was amazing, and they are free to download Jakky
If you use this site you can also search Gutenberg but if you enter "Texts" under media type then you get a full scan of the book rather than a OCR version. There are quite a number of 19th Century books on Lancashire.

Hi Martin, Thank you for a fantastic site, how do I download from it? I am a bit thick found one in Yorkshire by one of my Lamploughs (I think) a cracking site. Do you have any Burtonwoods, Thomas or Hallams from your Bolton searches? I had a look at your website and am overwhelmed at the great stuff on it, Jakky Once you click on the book title then you will see somethink like this at the left hand side
View the book
(5.2 MB)DjVu (15 MB)PDF (274 KB)TXT Flip Book FTP
Help reading texts Click on PDF and the whole book will be downloaded - beware the files can be up to 100MB!
I find it best to search on Media Type "Texts", if you do a second search then make sure you are searching the all libraries and not just the one that scanned the last book.
If you register with the site then you can Bookmark anything you find as you go along.
Sorry none of those names in my tree (except some Welsh THOMAS), there are some HALLAM in the Longton (Staffordshire) area of some friends' family that I have been looking at.

A great site ... thanks for pointing it out. I've found a book I've been searching for about the early days of the settlers in Canada ...

If you do find one then worth checking the category tag for any others on similar topic.
Also if you search GOOGLE BOOKS then you can search within the book, if you find one then search for the title on archive.org and you might be able to get the whole book. It can be amazing what you find when searching inside books - you can also search inside books on AMAZON but GOOGLE BOOKS has more old (i.e. out of copyright ones).

Thank you Jakky. This is brilliant! I will definitely be spending time playing with this!
I've played with the Google bookscan, but not this. It seems to have a different coverage.
I've had a few ancestors names off the Google one - including a death announcement abroad from Gentleman's magazine,
a piece from the New York Times on a certain gentleman who proved highly criminal! He avoided most censuses and I knew virtually nothing. Now I know why!!
Also a whole book by an ancestor. Not well known but maybe that's why IO was allowed the whole book!
This looks as if will cover other topics though.
Thank you again Jakky!
