Hi all,
I am trying to find the size of Meadowcap. I had hoped that the 1881 census would have a header to give the boundaries but no luck there. Do you think the school takes up the entire site ?

A Great idea. Now I wonder if the students would like to do a project on the history of their school.

The name " Meadowcap " goes back as far as the 1870,s. but was never to my knowledge, known as " The Meadows ", this area is a large green space, bordered by Loch Fad, Barone Road, and Rothesay old Cemetery. The local Shinty club play their matches there and there are also Tennis Courts and Childrens Swings. Meadowcap lies at the top of the High Street, beyond the new section of Rothesay Cemetery, and in days gone by, had a number of houses situated in the area. If you go to the Bute Sons and Daughters Site, you will find a number of researchers who have interest in Meadowcap. Jimreta

Hello jimreta, I think I was the one who started the questions about Meadowcap on BS&D as I had family born there in 1872 and another in 1874. Very happy today to find that you have more knowledge of it than I have been able to find so far. I found it on an Old Map (survey) dated 1869, and it appears to be around Townhead Windy hall Ashfield area. Would that be correct ? I have not been able to find a map that shows the new cemetery. If you could confirm or correct this I would appreciate your comments.
Regards Mackiwi

Hi MacKiwi, As you say, Meadowcap was in the general area of Townhead. When I talked about the new cemetary at High Street I may have used the wrong terminology, the old cemetary was extended as it became filled up, and the term " new cemetary " was used buy locals to diffrenciate between the two, there was a further extension but this too is now filled and the latest cemetary is now at the top of Barone Road, some 2 miles by road from Rothesay High Street Cemetary, hope this helps, regards jimreta
