I am looking for the birth reg. of one of my husband's lot, James STRATHDEE.
According to the 1861 census (when the family were living in Chelsea, London) James was born about 1858 in Ross (sic), Herefordshire. I assume that means Ross-on-Wye. His father, also called James, would have been working for the Great Western Railway at that time, probably as a signalman.
I have looked through the BMDs for a couple of years either side of 1858 but with no luck. Has anyone any ideas about how to find James?
Many thanks Prue

Hi Prue
When to say you've looked through the BMDs, do you mean the complete index? Or has your search been restricted to the partial FreeBMD index?
Dave

Here's a possibility ...
BIRTH REGISTRATION Male STRATHDE March quarter 1858 Ross, vol 6a page 436
"Male" and "Female" often means the registration of a child who died at birth. But could also refer to a child who has not yet been named. Only one way to find out!
Cheers Dave
PS: This is the only possible match I could find in 1858.

I can't see a corresponding death registration in the March or June quarter of 1858, so it does look like James's birth was registered without recording his first name.

Hi Dave and EBN, Yes, I've been through all the full BMD indexes, mind you I only looked at what Ancestry brought up for me with a search, so perhaps if I'd browsed instead I'd have found the ref you found, Dave. Interesting that you found a baptism, too! I haven't found any baptisms for their other children, but have only been looking on the IGI, so perhaps I'll do a BVRI lookup request on another thread, and see if I can find the others. James definitely survived to adulthood, so I will write to the Register office in Ross and get a copy of his birth reg. Thank you both very much for your help in finding young James! Cheers Prue
