Hi Audrey!

Hugh and David Maxwell of Ballywalter whose bodies are here interr’d They fell in an attack made on the town of Newtownards the 10th June 1798. “Lo Erin’s genius hov’ring o’er the tomb, With mournful eye surveys the hallow’d sod, Where sleep her bravest sons in earth’s dark womb, Tears fall, hope whispers “cease, they dwell with God.”’
The following quartet has only the dates on the individual headstones to connect it to the United Irishmen rebellion. James Dunlap, interred in Bangor Abbey cemetery, is listed, retrospectively, alongside two other Bangor men: ‘The following persons have been tried and found guilty at Newtownards, by Court-Martial, on charges of Treason and Rebellion: - James Dunlop, Thomas McKnight, and Robert Robinson, all of Bangor, were executed there on Tuesday last.’

Hiya Audrey,

There are a couple of McKnights in the Bangor area on this site http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~rosdavies/SURNAMES/Mc/McKiMcKy.htm I do not know if they would have been related to Thomas. There is one mentioned from Conlig. That is a small place off the Bangor - Newtownards road. Eddie Irvine, at one time a Formula 1 driver, was born there. You probably did not want to know that fact Cheesy I am full of useless knowledge Cheesy I have more interesting information for you though. Thomas McKnight probably fought at the Battle of Ballynahinch http://www.bbc.co.uk/northernireland/yourplaceandmine/down/bhinch_battle.shtml The Battle of Ballynahinch is the best known one..there was another at Saintfield and there were probably minor skirmishes elsewhere. http://www.ballynahinchregeneration.org/battle.htm
