Longships Rock, Lizard
« on: Tuesday 18 April 06 22:29 UTC (UK) »

Looking for information about Assistant Lighthouse Keeper John Palmer who drowned after being swept off rocks at the Lizard in 1871/1872 - Where do I start to look? - can anyone point me in the right direction please.

Palmer, John
#### Son 1855 Palmer was Supernumerary AK at the Lizard in 1872, when he was washed off the rocks there and drowned. Although the Trinity House tender was on the scene at the time and lowered a boat, he could not be found.
i googled ''john palmer lighthouse keeper the lizard'' and found this, if you want to try i think you may also find his father, kali.

Thanks to you both for the information you have gleaned - putting it in order - have now tied all the Palmer Lighthouse Keepers to within one family:

Thomas  - Father
Hugh & Rees - Sons of Thomas
John - son of Rees
John jnr - son of John

I have found John (son of Rees) death - he died at Portland Light in 1871

Another snippet of info received is that John jnr's death was reported in the Cornish Telegraph in 1872 - does anyone know where I could get a copy of this info.

Thanks again - Valry

Hi Lila thank your step father for that - more confused now.

The 1871 Census gives John as App Lighthouse keeper living with his father John at Portland.
Father John died in May 1871 at Portland Low Light.

1871 Great Uncle Hugh was Keeper at The Lizard - he died 3rd qt 1872

Found a report that John jnr Supernumery LKeeper was washed off the rocks at The Lizard (body not found) in 1872.

Gravestone for 'Father' John includes:

'Also JOHN eldest son of the above
who was washed off the Longships Rock
December 1872 aged 17 years'

Really must try harder to find a report of his death in the Cornish Telegraph - does anyone know where I can look for this information - Valry

Valry,

You might find the Trinity House gallery site of interest - lots of pictures of lighthouses and details of their history.

Hi kali

Thanks so much for the latest information - I have emailed the Cornish Studies Library and will let you know how I get on.

I did get a transcription of John senior and juniors gravestone so if I could get a copy of the accident it would put the icing on the cake.

Thanks again - Merry Christmas - Valry

Hi Kali, have received a reply from the Cornish Studies Library and it looks very much like they have the article which they will email to me and/or send by post.  Their fees are very reasonable (about £2 I think) and promptness in replying amazing.   Congratulations to them.

Thanks for you help - Happy Christmas - Valry
