Wayment / Price marriage
« on: Wednesday 19 April 06 10:57 UTC (UK) »

I have a birth cert for my g-g-grandfather Charles Henry Price born in Basingstoke in April 1842. Parents George Price and Elizabeth Price formerly Wayment.

I drew a blank from my search of the  marriage record indexes from 1837 to 1842. A search of "ancestry.co.uk" parish records for Hampshire is also a blank. Similarly the IGI site doesnt come up with any Elizabeth Wayment marriages in Hampshire.

So far I have been unable to identify George & Elizabeth in any Census.

Anybody got any suggestions about a next move?

(a) Search the 1841 census for the address on the birth cert.

(b) check for baptisms of other siblings

(c) look for those on the 1851 census with surname "Wayment" and see where they came from.

(d) see about buying fiche to search http://www.hants.gov.uk/record-office/services/microfiche.html

Hi nedroma,

Was George a railway fireman?

In 1851 it looks as if the family are in Norfolk with a 14 year old son.  This implies a marriage before 1837.

The children's birth-places are all over the place: Cove and Basingstoke in Hampshire, Stowmarket in Suffolk, Rouen in France (!!), and I think neice Mary Wayment is with them born in Cambridgeshire!
Charles is known as Henry

Thank you PaulineJ and Little Nell for your invaluable help which has helped me to move forward significantly on several fronts. There are so many new leads its hard to know where to start.

The George Price that I was trying to find out about describes himself as a labourer on the Charles Henry Price birth cert in 1842. There has always been family folk lore relating to a Price on the Railways with no evidence - now we have something to work on.

Today has also solved another mystery in that documentary info on a Charles Price in Farnham Royal had been passed onto me in family papers but I could not figure where he fitted in. Now all becomes clear in that the 1851 census tells me that George was also born in Farnham Royal, so they were probably brothers.

What is weird is that I was born in Cove in 1938. I dont think my parents ( both Londoners) were ever aware of a family connection with Cove. We  moved up to the Midlands in 1940.

Thank you both once again

Alan

PS the daughter born in Rouen - would she have a British birth cert of some sort?

Good question - unlikely, unless she is in the overseas section???

Have found her in 1861 - then her name is much easier to see (i.e. not faded!) she is Polinda !

George Price baptised Farnham Royal 19 Sep 1800, parents Henry & Sarah Price

Probable siblings:

John 27 Sep 1795
Sarah 19 Sep 1800
Charles 22 May 1803
Martha 16 Jun 1805
Harriet 31 Jan 1808
Elizabeth 11 Feb 1810
Thomas 4 Apr 1813
Mary Ann 14 Jan 1816

There is an implication that Sarah and George were born in 1798 and maybe twins.  Check the original if at all possible.

Hope that helps you.

Fantastic, thank you so much - you're a real star!

What a strange name - Polinda; cant find her after 1861 census or any UK marriage record, and so far I havent found where I can get access to the Overseas Section.

Meanwhile where did all the Farnham Royal info come from, and how do I check the original as suggested.

Finally, I would still like to find a record of the Wayment / Price marriage - how do you suggest I do that.

Hi Alan

The Farnham Royal information is from parish register transcripts - the originals will be found at the county record office in Aylesbury.  Otherwise try to borrow the film (for a small fee) to look at in your local LDS Family History centre.

The marriage could well be in Hampshire - the Hampshire Genealogical Society do have a marriage index, there is a fee to search for a marriage.  Otherwise, it is a search in the parish records, maybe Cove or Basingstoke, at the records office in Winchester.
