1861 census - Hitchin? - WHITTAMORE
« on: Wednesday 19 April 06 23:16 BST (UK) »

Hi All,

I am trying to find Frederick Whittamore b.1828 Hitchin - and his wife Priscilla b.1829 Hitchin in the 1861 census.

I have them in all the other census records - with no children - wondered if they had any in this census - but can't find them - tried Priscilla, Fredk and many spellings but no joy - they must be there somewhere - but it beats me!!

Cheers

Keith

Hello Keith,
Have you found 1861 census entry?
What about these spellings!
Whitamore
Whitmoar
Whitmor
Whittamore
Whittimore
Witmore
Whittomer
Whittomur
I found all these spellings in www.pirton.org.uk website. There were over 100 whittamore entries on the Pirton database. (Pirton is about 3 or 4 miles from Hitchin). Obviously most of these people were from Pirton. A few were not. They came from Offley: Hitchin; Letchworth: and Shillington, Beds. As a matter of interest the Chairman of Hitchin Boys Grammar School old boys association is a Whitmore. Also Richard Whitmore the TV personality (a few years back now) was from the Hitchin area.

Cheers

Hi there Keith, hope you're feeling better. What address(es) do you have them at in 1851 & 1871?

Having a look at Ancestry I think that some of the 1861 census for Hitchen is missing. I cannot find any concrete evidence of this but the different districts they list start at 4 and if you look at the enumerators reports for the ones shown there is a large area missing compared to 1871. This could be the reason you are unable to find them. Even searching surnames living near them on the 1871 census in the 1861 does not work. Maybe someone else out there could have a look at this, otherwise you could be wasting your time trying to find them. I have looked at LDS and there are no christenings that I can see for offspring of Frederick and Priscilla and given the fact there are none shown in 1871 I would think its unlikely they had any children that lived. I did find the christening of Frederick though and his siblings which you may/not have. Give us a shout if you need them.

Hi Keith,
Found their addresses of the 1851 & 1871 censuses, but I did a quick check of those addresses in 1861 and I can't find them there, sorry.
