Gallaghers & McGowans
« on: Friday 21 April 06 02:29 UTC (UK) »

I am looking for info on Bernard Gallagher born in 1848 in Donaghmore, Donegal.  He married Mary McGowan on 15 October 1876.  They had three children Denis (decd), Mary & Isabella before emigrating to Australia in 1882.  He was Roman Catholic.  Does anyone know of any RC Parish records of christenings or marriages available from that area?  Thanks  Lyn

Hiya Lyn,

Click here for some extracts of the records for Donaghmore Parish which is in the Derry Roman Catholic Diocese. There's also a Surname Index to children baptised 1840-1845 for the same Parish. These are
on the FromIreland.net website of Dr Jane Lyons of Dublin.

You'll probably have to ask someone to have a look at the full records.

Thanks Christoper for that information.  Have looked at the site you recommended and it does have all the family surnames.  I have done a lot of research since I posted my first message.  Could you please let me know how and who  to ask for more information.  I can see Gallaghers, McGowans, Quigleys etc on the list.  I know  that Bernard Gallagher (born1845) married Mary McGowan on 15th September, 1876 in Ballybofey or Stranarlor, Donegal.  I know Bernards parents were Denis Gallagher and Mary O'Reilly.  I have more information about Bernard's siblings , children born in Ireland and his maternal grandmother (Mary Quigley).  But only what is passed onto me from family recollections.  Can you point me in the right direciton.  It's difficult when you on the other side of the world in Australia.

Thanks for your help and advice

Hiya Lyn,

The Donaghmore link is on the www.from-ireland.net site of Dr Jane Lyons of Dublin. Jane also has a Yahoo Group & Mail list: Ireland Genealogy (aka Y-IRL) which is an Irish 'Genealogy' list, which she created in 2001. The list includes the genealogy, history and culture of the Irish in Ireland and the Irish Diaspora. There are loads of Australians on her site. I'd suggest subscribing to her site ... it's a bit like another RootsChat but don't subscribe to her list if all you want is names - do sub, if you want to find people who will help - later if not now, and if you want to find out about the Irish character.

I'll make an effort to get to PRONI to get more information on your Donaghmore ancestors. You'll see from the Baptismal and Marriage parish record index that they hold some records. You'll need to find someone who visits the National Library in Dublin too.

It looks as though I could be having a busy time over the next couple of years ... a part time university course on Four hundred years of the History of Belfast which includes a genealogy module ... more visits to PRONI and the libraries in Belfast.

Thanks Christoper for that information.  I have been on that web site before, but must admit, quite a while ago.  I too have spent many an hour in libraries and was fortunate enough to come across a book written about the eary settlers in the district my ancestors settled in Australia.  It has given me great anecdotes, connections between families, names of ships, etc.  Armed with this ammunition I will retrace my steps and search again.  I had posted my original request that you so kindly answered in April, 06.  So that proves it pays to be patient.  Thanks again for your help and advice.  Will continue the search and try that web site again.

I feel for you with your studies because I started writing my family history in narrative for those family members who want the "story" , not just data.  It seems like Topsy and continues to grow.  I don't think it will ever end.
