Snowball, I dont know if you are aware but there are a group of Frewers in the Ramsgate/Broadstairs area and also in the Henley area of Oxfordshire. I remembered seeing them when I was doing some lookups for Paula. I have a link to the Frewers in Ramsgate ( well St Peters Broadstairs actually) so the name stood out. I have had a look through the transcripts of St Peters I have and cant find a Robert Frewer marrying a Mary there though.
Dont know if this is any help at all or just a red herring
Thanks Jackie, My Robert Frewer was born in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. I think there were several Frewer families in Bury and Stowmarket in the late 18th Century. Regards Rob
Hi Snowball , have been interested in this one as i am from Oxford have loads of ancestors from Oxford and Oxon and i can't think or make out what it could mean either. I did find on Pallots index a Robert Frier who married a Mary Storer 4th April 1810 Belgrave.
I don't suppose this is helpful but I'll try to work it out. I can't find Mary on the 1851 census altho i have the reference
It could be as simple as Shire became Hine but it looks like 2 definite words DJ
My understanding is that the final census details we see today were copied from the original reports which were collected door to door - hence we may see 'unknown' as a place of birth if the transcriber couldn't read the original report.
This happened on very census except the 1861 for my gggrandfather, who was from Londonderry.
So perhaps the writing was poor and the transcriber couldn't read it very well and just did his best - the only places I can think of which are a bit like 'Hine' are Henley and Ewelme. To me, Oxford is definately the county.
