« on: Sunday 23 April 06 21:32 BST (UK) »

My relative Jeremiah Pickup emigrated to Ontario - Hespelair probably in 1860's.  I have him in the 1851 census in Uk , Newton.  I have no idea what ship he went on and what year, can anyone help. Thanks

He is in the 1871 Census living in Hespeler, it just gives the head of household, you have to look at the original to see who else is there.

There is the following marriage:

Groom:  George E. Pickup
Bride:  Martha L. Anderson
Date:  April 26, 1893
Place:  Hespeler, Ontario
Registration #012318

You would have to look at the original to see who the parents are.  Are you in Ontario?

Looks like by 1880 Jerimiah and his family have moved to Holyoke, Hampden, MA

Jerimiah, born England 1837
Mary Jane, born England 1840
George E., born Ontario, 1866
Albert E., born Ontario 1868
Frederick, born Ontario 1870
John A., born Ontario 1872
Lillian J, born MA 1876

Jerimiah is an Overseer in a Mill.  Hespeler was a huge Mill town, perhaps he was transferred there due to work?

In 1892 Jerimiah is still in Holyoke, living at 256 Pine, and is an overseer for the weaving department Farr Alpaca Co.

thanks for all help, not sure that the passenger list can be right as it says his wife is Martha and I know he married Mary Jane Traplin.  I know he moved from canada, he was an overseer in cotton mill and ended up in MA USA, but unsure of name of ships and dates he went.

Daisydi,

I lived in Hespeler when I was little.  My mother and her mother grew up there.  It is now part of the city of Cambridge.

These websites have some interesting old photos of Hespeler:

http://www.imagescanada.ca/r1-115-e.php?kwf=TRUE&kwq=hespeler&interval=6&x=29&y=12

I wonder if someone at the Hespeler Library might have some information for you:
