Thomas and William Mc Ewan emigrated to NewZealand THANKYOU!!! YOU FOUND THEM!!
« on: Sunday 16 April 06 21:46 BST (UK) »

I am looking for relatives ,Thomas(Tommy) and William (Willie) McEwan who emigrated from Scotland to New Zealand around the 1920s. Their Mother was Martha McEwan,m.s.Sherman and their father was Samuel McEwan who was a miner. Their sister was Martha who married James Craig. They would have lived around the Bellshill/ Coatbridge area. They were also probably miners. Hope someone can help.

Thomas came with his wife Dorothy(Dora) m.s. Revie and their three  children ;Samuel, Matthew and ?. Matthew was in the navy during WW2 and visited family in  Coatbridge. Family members still remember the visit! They may have settled somewhere in Wellington and Thomas may have worked for a town council.

William came with his wife Dionne?  and their son Victor.  William was dead by the time of Matthew's visit . I believe the family kept in touch for a time.

hi Ltudball

Do you know when Thomas and William were born as this  may help us identify  them and make the look a little easier, as McEwan is not an uncommon name.

Hi Ltudball

Was about to give up the search then I noticed your addition up the top re their wives and children, so I'll keep on ferreting around to see what I can find.....are you absolutely certain they (Tommy, Willie) had no middle names? It might help if they did....

Sandringham is one of the older semi inner-city suburbs of Auckland - as such, it's not the cosy little family area it may once have been, though I'm sure parts of it still are - but the general feeling of it is very spread out, a lot of cheaper housing (students etc).

In Auckland phone book are 45 McEWAN listings, not as many as I expected.
Some of them are in the general locale of Sandringham, but because of how the demographic of those areas has changed over the years, I'd hesitate to imagine any connection based on the locations.....And as for Wellington, well it's the capital city and has many suburbs etc......there are 24 McEWAN's in phone book.

In ARCHWAY:
http://archway.archives.govt.nz/CallSimpleSearch.do
there is a Thomas McEWAN probate record Auckland 1962, his  occupation described as "Clerk of Works" - that's a Council type job, may be well worth following up - it may be your best possible lead so far?

Cheers

There are a Thomas, Dorothy and Samuel recorded at Purewa Cemetery. The dates tie in. and all three are listed as  Baptists.

Linda!

I've found Victor - he lives in South Auckland, I know the area he's in well - and he is in contact with his cousin Matthew  Grin  And Thomas did work for the Dept of Public Works for the Council.

Victor is very excited to hear from you! I'll PM you his email address.

Cheers
AMBLY

BTW: Jean, spot on  Grin - Victor confirms the family in Purewa is a match on all 3 counts!
