I'm trying to find info on my great grandparents, Thomas Goodall (b. 1857 in Birmingham) and Amelia (nee Ingram b. 1859 in Middlesex).

On their marriage certificate Thomas GOODALL was living in Lorne Terrace, Icknield Street, Birmingham. Amelia INGRAM was living at 138 Brearley Street, Birmingham.

My great grandfather's father was also Thomas GOODALL but I can find no trace of his mother or any brothers or sisters.  He wasn't alive at the date of their marriage which took place on 25 December 1878 at Wesley Chapel Howard Street.

Amelia's parents in the 1881 census are:  William James INGRAM (born Southwark, London c. 1837) and Eliza (born Shrewsbury c.1837) , living at 43 Park Road Birmingham.  They had 2 children living with them (Annie Wilmot b. circa 1861 and Elizabeth b. circa 1866).

My great grandfather owned a shop - "Goodall's Confectioners and Tobacconist".  On their marriage certificate his father was also noted as being a Confectioner. I have 2 photos of different shops.  Luckily, having met many of my great aunts and uncles I know most of their history.

I'm really trying to find out more on Thomas' parents and any siblings - also Amelia's family.

Sorry for such a long-winded post but if this rings any bells with anyone, I'd love to hear from you!!

Hi Wendy

I am afraid it is back to basics on this one

You already know that Thomas was born in 1857 in Birmingham - should be quite simple to get a copy of his birth certifcate which will list both his mother and his fathers name - by looking through the 1857 to 1859 Birth registers at the Family History Centre in London.
Two sites on the net which could give you the reference number in order to get the certificate are 'Freebmd' and  '1837online' - you can then send for the certificate.

Street Directories will give you more information on the Confectioners shops.

The same applies to Amelias family - just keep working backwards with birth and marriage certificates, then fill in gaps and siblings through the census returns.

Thanks Chris (again Wink )!  I have tried searching the FreeBMD and 1837online for my grandparents' births but, so far, have had no luck.  Unfortunately, all my searches are internet based but I shall keep trying.

All the best,

Wendy
