Sharon

First of all thank you for those compliments - it is nice to know that ones efforts are appreciated; but I love helping others research, so its no hardship at all.

All the info you want is in the East Sussex Record Office at the Maltings in Lewes - which by chance is virtually just across the road from St John Sub Castro and its Churchyard.

Yes, I would book a seat for Monday and then whilst there book up for the rest of the week as is necessary.  You can book a chair with an electric point for your computer so that you can tap it all in as you find it.

When you arrive on Monday, let the staff know what kind of records you want to look at, as a lot of records are not kept on site - they have to get them in which usually takes a couple of days.

Hope that helps

I have just looked at several other Church Burials in Lewes - i.e. St John Baptist Southover, St Michael South Malling, All Saints - none of them have any BISH burials - so it looks as though they stuck around the St John Sub Castro area.  That should shorten your search in the Church Registers

Hi Chris,

After rereading some info on Webb ancestors I realised that there might hopefully be one or two in Lewes.
In particular I am looking for Rose Ann Webb died 1936 and maybe her husband George Thomas Webb d 1948.
Of course any other Webbs may well be relevant so any info you have would be welcome.

regards
Sean

Hi Sean

Memorial No 723 in St John Sub Castro

723-

In memory/
of A.. Mary wife of R Webb/
daughter of .........../
who died Dec the 21st 1786/
aged .../
Also of Ann Webb/
their daughter/
who died/
August 11 1772/
aged 69 years/
Also of Sarah Wilson/
their daughter who died/
May 8 1786 aged ../
Also to the memory of
John Wilson
who died March 11th 1778/
aged 77 years/

As you can see from the transcription of the slab on the grave, there should be anything up to 4 people in this grave - Actually it is a brick lined Vault with only 1 Lead Coffin in it..

I know this because that piece of broken stone in the bottom right hand corner of the vault is easily removed and you can see inside the vault - revealing only 1 lead coffin sitting on some metal brackests, but there are other metal brackets with nothing on them.

Wonder if this was the scene of a Grave Robbers crime in the late 1700's ?
