1841 census Penelope Ginger please
« on: Saturday 29 April 06 13:01 BST (UK) »

Hi.  Could someone please lookup Penelope Ginger (aged approx. Cool on 1841 Buckinghamshire census.  She was probably living in Great or Little Hampden.  I would be interested to know who she is living with.

Penelope's parents were James and Sarah Ginger.  Probably living at Great Hampden or Little Hampden, though I'm not sure.  Both Penelope and Ginger were unusual names so I wouldn't have thought there would be many of them.

How very odd that entry is.  No adults listed and the address is the canal.  I wonder what they were doing on the canal!

You're right ,I hadn't noticed that because it was crossed through.Could they have been apprentice shoemakers or do you think Mrs Rebecca Clarke was a private teacher, hmmmm.
Anyhow as far as I can tell Penelope Ginger is the only one on the 1841.
That's unless anyone finds another hidden somewhere.

Sorry in the delay in replying, I haven't logged on since yesterday afternoon.  In response to your query about Penelope, she was (as you will have seen on the 1851 census return) the daughter of James and Sarah Ginger of Little Hampden farm.  The Gingers farmed there back at least to Elizabethan times.  The 1841 entry is very odd.  I concluded like you that she must have been an apprentice shoemaker.  They certainly started them young in those days.  One of the children was six!
