MENZIES in Durrisdeer to Newark Notts
« on: Sunday 30 April 06 18:13 BST (UK) »

My MENZIES ancestor was in Newark Nottinghamshire just in time to be included on the 1841 census there.  John's age is given as 25 giving a birth year of around 1816.  Throughout the various census he states he was born Dumfries Scotland.
On the 1841 census he has his younger brother Robert (21) living with him and I know that they were joined by a third brother, Thomas.  All three married in Newark and all three were in business.  John became a Master Draper and both Robert and Thomas were Tea Dealers and then Grocers.

All three called their eldest son Andrew and their second daughter Agnes.  In each case the second son is named for the father of the wife and the eldest daughter for the mother of the wife so I believe they were following a traditional naming pattern.

All three state their father to have been Andrew MENZIES occupation Farmer on their marriage certificates.  I do have a baptism for Thomas at Enterkinfoot to Andrew MENZIES and Agnes MINGUS.

I also have a copy of the death registeration of an Andrew and Agnes MENZIES of Woodhouselee, brother and sister, which shows their father to have been Andrew and their mother Agnes.  Andrew and Agnes junior are shown on the 1881 census at Woodhouselee.

Despite searching for some years I have not been able to find a baptism for John MENZIES.  There is an Agnes MINGUS whose father was John and I believe this is likely to be the same Agnes who married Andrew and that my gt gt grandfather John was therefore the second son.

Anyone else with a connection to Newark?

Hello Audrey,

Many thanks - I did hire a researcher to check the parish registers held in the Archives in Dumfries and he couldn't find John, Andrew or Agnes either!  I was told that some ministers did not record their baptisms/marriages etc and that this was the most likely reason I cannot find theirs.

I know you may already know this but Menzies is pronounced "minges" so your agnes's surname would probably be menzies
