Lewes - Dolphin Lane ?
« on: Monday 01 May 06 20:51 BST (UK) »

I am researching the Breeds family from Lewes.   My great grandfather was born in Dolphin Lane, Lewes.  I cant seem to find this on any map and wondered if anyone had any details of where this would have been.

Many thanks

Hi
Welcome to rootschat.  What date are we talking about here?  Name??  If you can find them in a census it might be possible to follow the enumerator's route and see where it was.   I see that in 1881 for instance George Breeds and family were living in St Nicholas Lane.
A bit more information might help us to pin it down.

Hi,

Dolphin Lane was in All Saints' parish and I think you will find that it is now St Nicholas Lane.  It is a very steep lane running from the High Street down to the "Southover road."  My 3x gt grandfather was killed there in 1844 when he tried to stop a runaway van.

I'll look out my notes which I took a couple or so years ago.

Heavens, the brain still works!!  (except the notes are 5 years old  Roll Eyes )

The boundary of All Saints' parish and St John's sub Castro parish runs between 44 and 45 St Nicholas Lane, which did indeed used to be called Dolphin Lane.

My great grandparents, GEORGE and ANNIE BEAUMONT kept the Dolphin Inn which was at the top of St Nicholas Lane, near the High Street junction. They ran the pub from 1898 to 1901 and were there at the time of the 1901 census.

Hi everyone,

Many thanks for the information on Dolphin LAne.  I knew that my ancestors in the 1881 census were living in St. Nicholas Lane but didnt realise until I received your kind help that this was the same Lane that had previously been known as Dolphin Lane.

Thank you.

Hi Chris in 1066

Many thanks for all the burials for Breeds in Lewes.  So far as I can tell most of my Breeds were associated with All Saints, Lewes, but there were a few who strayed elsewhere!

Again many thanks for all your hard work and I will sit down and see if any of these are "my" Breeds,

Its me again Chris,

On the list of burial entries for St. John Sub Castro, there is an entry for a Bessie Breeds, aged 12, who died 9 Feb 1912 at Victoria Hospital, Lewes.

Could I please take you up on your kind offer of a translation of the memorial stone and a photo of it ?

Many thanks

Hello there,

I'm a Breeds and am interested in all Breeds in Kent and Sussex. Once you have the names of Elizabeth's parents I may be able to help you with previous generations if that is significant to your research.

Cheers,
