Toesland - Corn
« on: Tuesday 02 May 06 14:40 UTC (UK) »

Am looking for any details on a Jemima Corn, born 1837 Toesland, parents Abraham & Mary Ann Corn (nee Connington).
1851 census was age 13 , lacemaker, living with parents Toesland  then nothing, have not found a death or marriage.

Can any one through any light please?

If you really can't wait to sort it out there is always the facility to order a certificate to clarify the names, I am almost sure it must be her.
I have looked for her on the 1861 but Toesland does not come up, is there any other area name that could be near, even Huntingdonshire does not come up with a Jemima

Thanks,
have had a quick look at the Toesland 1861 census ( a friend sent me a copy), have also got the 1861 for Rutland and Hunts., will have a go at that one now.
There isn't any hurry now, have been looking for awhile so a bit longer won't matter.

Hi Beckey

I have Corns from Toseland in my tree via my ggg grandmother Lydia Corn - I'm on holiday at the moment but am home tomorrow so I'll see what I have on Jemima. Lydia has been a problem for me for some time as she doesn't appear to have been christened but as there was only one Corn family in Toseland at the time - 1805 - she can only have come from this family. I have her in every census consistently giving Toseland as her birthplace, but I cannot prove to my satisfaction who her parents were.

LM - the spelling is actually Toseland which may be why searches for Jemima and Toesland have thrown up nothing

Regards

Hi David,

Have always spelt it Toesland and not had any bother.

If the Lydia is 1804  and married a Moses Hedge, the thought is John Corn and Catherine Mitchell, but so far no proof can be found, have been contacted before about this direct some time ago, you may have been the one and I believe that they were going to try and find the baptism.

I'm descended from one of John Corn's sons, Abraham, if that rings a bell.

LM- have sent for marriage cert, keeping fingers crossed.

Hi LM,

Certificate arrived today and it would seem to be the correct one.
Joseph Ray age 23, father John, married Jemima Corne age 19, father Abraham, 1858 Parish Church of St Neots.
Thanks for the nudge, had tried before on FreeBMD, could have come through on one of the later updates.

If any one else reads this, I would appreciate any information on the Ray family of St Neots.
There is no record of Joseph & Jemima on the 1861 census in Huntingdon or for that matter anywhere else, (have tried 1837online), nor on the 1861 disc I have.

In St Neots RG9/981 folio 79A there's a John Ray head 61 with son Joseph 25 might be Mar might be Wer ag lab b St Neots, but there's no sign of Jemima. Might she have died between 1858 and 1861? She's not in Toseland

Lost my reply so I am starting all over again just in case you have received one half completed

1851 found Abraham and family in Toseland with Jemima down as dau in law.

1861 shows Abraham and family

Sorry but I have used combinations of the surname and found nothing, free bmd's don't show a death immediately after the marriage but it  is not complete.

If there were any issue form Joseph and Jemima (what lovely names) then I suppose a birth cert will be the next thing, it might give you an address nearer to the 1861.

Did you find them on nay other census ?.

Sorry not to have had any luck

regards

Hi David,

Thanks, don't know how I missed it, probably got tired reading too many pages.

It looks right, there is a Mary (witness) and if I read it right Joseph is a widower, bit unclear but doesn't look like married.

Thanks LM for trying, looks like the marriage didn't last long, doesn't seem to be any children.

Thanks LM,

It looks like Jemima died between 1858 & 61 possibly in childbirth, am going to have a search for her, plenty of web sites to have a go at.

I have had a quick look at Ancestry BDM's, no trace between 1858 and 1861.
