Muir Street Churchyard, Hamilton MIs - Help please
« on: Wednesday 03 May 06 21:08 BST (UK) »

I am looking for Janet Hamilton and any other Hamiltons buried in Muir Street Churchyard, Hamilton.

Janet died 23rd May 1856 and according to her death record she was buried in Muir Street Churchyard.   There is also a record of a brother Thomas who died in Hamilton in 1861.

Although Janet is believed to have been unmarried she had a son John (Hamilton or Mather) who died in Hamilton in 1873.

This family has been a brick wall for me for about 5 years now, so any information will be greatly appreciated.

William

Hi William, there are no records for this burial ground, other than a lair (plot) plan with no date, but gives owners from about 1823 until 1848. (Several families called Hamilton)  Your problem is that the surname Hamilton is as common as Smith, White or Brown in the area of your search.  The burial ground is now the car park area for Hamilton Town Hall and as far as I know, none of the gravestones were preserved. (apart from 1 which is still built into the car park wall). No MIs exist that I know of.  The ground belonged to Muir St 1st Relief Congregation Church, founded 1776, the church is still there but has been the local auction market for the past 100 years or so. Do you have Janet's parents names and her approximate date of birth?

Thanks for the info Lodger.

Janet's death record shows her parents as Gavin Hamilton (Farmer) and Jane Robertson.

Janet died in 1856 at the age of 81.  This would give her birth year as 1775.

The nearest I can get to that is a Janet Hamilton born in Lesmahagow in 1777 to a James Hamilton and Janet Robeson.

The 1851 Census shows a Janet Hamilton age 74 living with her brother Thomas Hamilton age 72 in Quarry Road, Hamilton. This is the same address as appears on her death record.

There is also a Jane Brodie (neice). I have found her as Jane Robeson Brodie, the daughter of Margaret Hamilton.

Hi William, I've checked the lair plan and no Gavin Hamilton I'm afraid. (No Brodie either).  I also have a transcript of the Baptism Book for this church, dating from 1776 - 1800.  No children of Gavin Hamilton there either.  It was worth a try.  I also checked the list of subscribers to the building of the church in 1776 - no luck!  Nothing in the MIs for the parish churchyard either.

7 lairs owned by Hamiltons.

All bodies were re-interred in Bent cemetery in 1964 in the new Western Section.

This is a poor quality copy of the 1st Relief Congregation Church.  It is now L S Smellie's Auction Rooms.  The street on the bottom right is Muir St, the one on the left is Lower Auchengramont road.  The burial ground was on the other side of this road.  The building has been added to but the original shape can still be made out.  The small cottage on the far left is now an Indian restaurant.  All the other buildings are still there in modified form.

Many thanks.  Do you have any other info regarding this lair?

The 1851 census shows a Thomas Hamilton - labourer living Quarry Road.  Also listed is his sister Janet Hamilton.

Also in the Glasgow Sherrif Court Inventories there is an entry dated Feb 1861 for a Thomas Hamilton, labourer at Law Quarry, sister of Jean Hamilton.

Any help would be appreciated.
