Hi William, there are no records for this burial ground, other than a lair (plot) plan with no date, but gives owners from about 1823 until 1848. (Several families called Hamilton) Your problem is that the surname Hamilton is as common as Smith, White or Brown in the area of your search. The burial ground is now the car park area for Hamilton Town Hall and as far as I know, none of the gravestones were preserved. (apart from 1 which is still built into the car park wall). No MIs exist that I know of. The ground belonged to Muir St 1st Relief Congregation Church, founded 1776, the church is still there but has been the local auction market for the past 100 years or so. Do you have Janet's parents names and her approximate date of birth?

Hi William, I've checked the lair plan and no Gavin Hamilton I'm afraid. (No Brodie either). I also have a transcript of the Baptism Book for this church, dating from 1776 - 1800. No children of Gavin Hamilton there either. It was worth a try. I also checked the list of subscribers to the building of the church in 1776 - no luck! Nothing in the MIs for the parish churchyard either.

7 lairs owned by Hamiltons.
All bodies were re-interred in Bent cemetery in 1964 in the new Western Section.

This is a poor quality copy of the 1st Relief Congregation Church. It is now L S Smellie's Auction Rooms. The street on the bottom right is Muir St, the one on the left is Lower Auchengramont road. The burial ground was on the other side of this road. The building has been added to but the original shape can still be made out. The small cottage on the far left is now an Indian restaurant. All the other buildings are still there in modified form.
